Greetings All.
I just upgraded my licensed copy Registry Mechanic to version 5.? One of the many additions to the new version is a process called 'Optimize Your System'.
The following quote is from the 'Help' file: 'Registry Mechanic's Optimize Your System function applies a set of tweaks and patches to the Windows Registry which are designed to optimize and improve system performance. These tweaks and patches can improve Windows startup and shut down speeds, as well as the handling of hung processes and process termination.? The Optimize Your System / Reset Optimization button alternates between applying this set of tweaks and patches to the registry and reverting these back to recommended default values.'
While reading through the 'Help' file I came across the following statement about one of these 'tweaks' and it confused me.? ?
'Hung Applications Are Ended Automatically
When this tweak is applied, it will force Windows to shut down immediately, ending all tasks without attempting to safely close those that have hung, which can cause delays.'
Upon reading that statement I went to their web site and posted a question to their 'Support' system.? Have had no response yet.? It has been only a few days, so while I wait for them to respond I thought I would give the wizards at PCHF a shot at this one.
The following is a portion of what I wrote.? (Used here to show my thinking)
The heading states 'Hung applications are ended automatically' and then the explanation below it states that 'Windows will shut down immediately'.? Which one is it really?
Maybe I do not understand Win XP as well as I thought.? It has been my experience that there are times when using 'Task Manager' to shut down a 'Not Responding' program is the right thing to do.? Maybe I am confusing a 'Hung Application' and a 'Not Responding' program.? I thought they were the same thing.? If this is not correct, please explain the difference.
Maybe it is just the phrase 'ending all tasks without attempting to safely close those that have hung' to be some what contrary to the Windows philosophy of the XP OS.? They gave us the ability to close programs without shutting Windows down improperly (the old Ctrl+Alt+Delete thingy).?
So far this 'tweak' has not been put to the test of a 'hung application', mostly because I have followed the advise of the 'gurus' at PCHF and kept my system lean and as secure as I can make it.? ?

With that said, I invite any and all to give their opinion about this feature.
