Default [Answered] Strange Feature - Registry Mechanic

Greetings All.

I just upgraded my licensed copy Registry Mechanic to version 5.? One of the many additions to the new version is a process called 'Optimize Your System'.

The following quote is from the 'Help' file: 'Registry Mechanic's Optimize Your System function applies a set of tweaks and patches to the Windows Registry which are designed to optimize and improve system performance. These tweaks and patches can improve Windows startup and shut down speeds, as well as the handling of hung processes and process termination.? The Optimize Your System / Reset Optimization button alternates between applying this set of tweaks and patches to the registry and reverting these back to recommended default values.'

While reading through the 'Help' file I came across the following statement about one of these 'tweaks' and it confused me.? ?

'Hung Applications Are Ended Automatically

When this tweak is applied, it will force Windows to shut down immediately, ending all tasks without attempting to safely close those that have hung, which can cause delays.'

Upon reading that statement I went to their web site and posted a question to their 'Support' system.? Have had no response yet.? It has been only a few days, so while I wait for them to respond I thought I would give the wizards at PCHF a shot at this one.

The following is a portion of what I wrote.? (Used here to show my thinking)

The heading states 'Hung applications are ended automatically' and then the explanation below it states that 'Windows will shut down immediately'.? Which one is it really?

Maybe I do not understand Win XP as well as I thought.? It has been my experience that there are times when using 'Task Manager' to shut down a 'Not Responding' program is the right thing to do.? Maybe I am confusing a 'Hung Application' and a 'Not Responding' program.? I thought they were the same thing.? If this is not correct, please explain the difference.

Maybe it is just the phrase 'ending all tasks without attempting to safely close those that have hung' to be some what contrary to the Windows philosophy of the XP OS.? They gave us the ability to close programs without shutting Windows down improperly (the old Ctrl+Alt+Delete thingy).?
So far this 'tweak' has not been put to the test of a 'hung application', mostly because I have followed the advise of the 'gurus' at PCHF and kept my system lean and as secure as I can make it.? ?:

With that said, I invite any and all to give their opinion about this feature.

:-) Hey Rod-O-Matic,

This sounds like one of those poorly written tech manual issues. I think your post to them was written perfectly, please make sure to post thier answer here, it will be very interesting to hear thier reply.

Sometimes I think tech writers should actually have to use thier manuals :-D

tjnbarbour and merlin.

I have yet to hear from PCTools. Speculating on why they have not responded runs from the funny to the freaky, to me anyway. I guess we will just have to wait.

I will post the reply as so as I get one. (?)

Maybe they count on the users to be their editors. Cheeper that way !

merlin.

I agree with you about doing ones own tweaking. I have done my own since I learned what the Registry could do. I will admit that there have been times when I really messed up the OS, in those dark days before XP and 'Last good configuration'. Have yet to blow up a PC, thank God.

Thanks Guys

Hey - this is a common Windows tweak used to speed up shutdown times.
It is safe and recommended.

"Automatically Ending Hung Applications
When this tweak is enabled it will force Windows to shutdown immediately ending all tasks without attempting to safely close any applications that have hung."

The compacting dialog, to my understanding, has only one button because it must want us to only restart - seeing as the registry has been compacted, if we install/change things they wont be reflected when the machine restarts as it actually applies the compact.
It works like other compactors but is much safer as it doesn't include certain hives like system.

Well it only took 17 days for a response and I said I would l let you read it. (1st quote) ? I also included their reason for the delay. (2nd quote)

In response to your first question, regarding the 'Hung Applications are Ended Automatically', this is a recommend tweak. Please note however that this only refers to applications that are hung when Windows is shutting down. For example, by default if Windows is asked to shut down and a program is frozen, Windows will stop shutting down and wait for 20 seconds before ending it. This tweak causes Windows to automatically end the process.

The absence of a No button on the Compact restart message was due to it being removed as the restart is necessary there. This is because the first part of the Compact is an analyze function, the actual compacting does not get done until restart. If any changes were made to the registry between analyzing and restart, then the compact would not be successful.

With the recently awarded PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award for Spyware Doctor 3.2, the PC Tools Support Team has received a huge increase in sales queries. This has delayed our response time for all support queries. Please be assured that your business is valued and that have been endeavouring to answer your questions as soon as we can.

Later
