Hi Crush,

1. I uninstalled RUBotted and installed the Spybot S&D. Have it running but I need to read about it and look at the settings etc.
In the setup it said it would create a Registry, and I'm not sure it did. Is there a way of checking if the Registry has been made?

2. Malwarebytes (does it start and run automatically?) No unfortunately. But, if you keep it updated, and scan regularly it is one of the best programs out there.
Secunia may catch it, but if it do
esn't, how often should I update Malwarebytes? And how often should I scan with it?

3. Blocking scripts is just another way to keep your PC safe, yes. 9 times out of ten a script will be safe and required to view or play certain content on a website.
Then is there a way to tell if the script/s NoScript is blocking is safe to allow or just go ahead and allow them? If that's the case is there a need for NoScript in the first place?

4. I thought about emptying the Recycle Bin, but the old head forgot. So it's done now.

5. That being said, we need to remove some of the more destructive tools we used. Things like DDS, and such should only be used under the strict supervision of someone trained in their use. Otherwise your computer may be relegated to being used as a doorstop
The removal is very easy:
Please download and run OTC (formerly OTCleanIt) from here
I downloaded and ran OTC and dds.scr was still there. So, I did the OTC again and dds.scr is still there. I thought about un-installing it, but it wasn't on the list. Do I just delete it to the recycle bin and then empty the Recycle Bin? If OTC didn't get the dds.scr did it get the other programs you want to remove?

I'm surprised I could tell you about a program you don't know about.

Getting close to no more questions... (at least for this)
Thanks, Bernadine

If Spybot opens and functions you're good

Chances are Secunia won't catch it as that's not what Secunia was made for. Anyway, I'd say update and run a Full Scan with Malwarebytes weekly

I don't use it, and haven't been infected badly in 4 years

It's likely that dds.scr is just a leftover shortcut that OTC missed. You can safely remove it and purge the recycle bin.

I'm surprised I could tell you about a program you don't know about.
Im always learning new things Bernadine.

Feel free to ask away.

That was quick!

1. If Spybot opens and functions you're good
Oh, good.

2. I'd say update and run a Full Scan with Malwarebytes weekly.
I need to make a calendar with the things I need to do for the computer.

3. I don't use NoScript, and haven't been infected badly in 4 years.
It can be a hassle, depending on how bad, bad is, I'll probably uninstall it.
Considering you know so much about all this, how bad was bad?

4. It's likely that dds.scr is just a leftover shortcut that OTC missed. You can safely remove it and purge the recycle bin.
I right clicked and the Properties say it is the program on the Desktop. I clicked on the dds.scr icon and it did bring up the Open File with the run button all ready to go.

Feel free to ask away.
Oh I so appreciate all your help, but I'm more than ready to be done.

Thanks, Bernadine

Bernadine,

I need to make a calendar with the things I need to do for the computer.
As funny as that would be, I can't knowingly let you take up a wall with a calendar for your computing needs when Windows comes built with one .

If you go Start>Accessories>System Tools>Scheduled Tasks

This will bring up the Scheduled Tasks Wizard. Basically this allows you to set anything to happen at any given time.

The thing we need to set in this example is Malwarebytes. From the list navigate to Malwarebytes and click Next.

Choose Weekly in this next list and set a time and day that is best for you. This will open the program so you don't forget to scan with it.

It can be a hassle, depending on how bad, bad is, I'll probably uninstall it.
Considering you know so much about all this, how bad was bad?
Well, I haven't been infected as long as I have had the machine I'm currently posting on, and as far as I can remember I have never been infected. But, I have seen some extremely badly infected machines both here and at work. As far as your machine goes, that was nothing

I right clicked and the Properties say it is the program on the Desktop. I clicked on the dds.scr icon and it did bring up the Open File with the run button all ready to go.
You can safely delete it. As DDS doesn't install anything per se to your machine deleting it will remove the program and all its contents to the recycle bin.

Oh I so appreciate all your help, but I'm more than ready to be done.
Not a problem at all Bernadine. That's what we're here for

As I said a couple posts ago, you may wish to give these threads a look through for some more valuable information regarding how to keep this from happening again:

I will follow your instructions and set up schedules for it.

dds.scr is gone.

I know it wasn't nearly as bad as computer problems can get, but for me at time my stress level was at high. Can Scripts actually cause those kinds of bad problems? Maybe I need to keep NoScripts on and just deal with the inconvenience. This is my only question I still haven't figured out and know what to do.

I have saved these and as soon as I am rested from this and ready to tackle more computer stuff, they are on the top of my to do list.

Thanks, Bernadine

As long as you have an adequate protection schema you'll be fine. What programs do you currently have installed?

I have saved these and as soon as I am rested from this and ready to tackle more computer stuff, they are on the top of my to do list.
Awesome

Hi Crush,

I have AVG Antivirus, Comodo Firewall, SpyBot S&D, and Malwarebytes installed. Plus the Secuna, NoScript, and AdBlock Plus. I guess the basic question now are these programs enough? and do I need NoScipt? I never get any pop up ads so the AdBlock Plus must be working, or something is. AND will these programs be enough when/if I can get the WiFi to work? (but that's for a future time, and hopefully it will go easily with no questions! And if I do, I certainly know where to come.)
