Default Strange behaviour - slow system, IE7 errors etc

Hi

Hope you can help with some unexplained recent problems I've had, which may or may not be associated.

I recently had to remove a trojan, detected by AVG 7.5 (unfortunately, I didn't make a note of the name of the detected virus).

I then also had an encounter with a pop-up (entitled "xpdownload" or something similar), which didn't appear to have any effect as I was in the process of closing my network access at the time.

I ran CCleaner, then ran tests with Windows Defender, AVG 7.5 and Kasperspy Online Scanner which all suggested that things were clean again.

However, I've had sporadic problems, particularly when using Internet Explorer 7:

* "RPC server not available" errors, or similar, when attempting to download files
* IE7 freezing up completely, requiring shutdown through File Manager (which also takes a fair while)
* Once when booting up from cold, a message at the front of Vista, stating that my "desktop was being built", followed by error messages about certain system32 files already being in use or not available at the expected location
* general slowness of system when opening or closing programs

Is this behaviour related to the virus that AVG picked, or the "xp" pop-up, or is it something different?

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated, as I'm in the dark at present. Thanks in advance!

Hi stone, to start i would suggest you follow the instructions in the PREWORK link in my signature and post back with the relevant logs, this will enable our security team to assess whether this is a malware problem

I'm running SUPERAntiSpyware as I write.

Can you shed any general light on the "RPC server unavailable" error? First time I've come across it.

Thanks again...
