Default [Fixed] Hijack this log: had desktop hijacker just making sure I got everything.
Hiya. Tonight I picked up a trojan spyware virus and need to make sure it is gone. It was a desktop hijacker and kept popping up screens telling me to update my spyware program but it just took me to a site to buy spyware software. I ran spyware doctor and it found a few things and cleaned them up. I then ran windows defender and it caught one more which is adware:win32/vapsup. I tried to remove it but it seemed to giving defender a hard time to remove it. I am not sure how fast it should have been removed but I waited 10-15 minutes so it is still coming up in defender. I ran hijack this and here is the log. Any help is greatly appreciated.

hello moe, welcome to the forums.....got a couple infections in there, also, did you install that comcast toolbar, and if so, do you use it?

Regardless, please do the following:
We need to download ComboFix.exe. This will give a better view to the files running and also hidden on your computer.
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Please copy and paste the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new 'HijackThis' log so that we can continue to do any further cleaning that your system may require.
Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a security analyst.
NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of all CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

I downloaded the combo fix program.I am concerned about installing the vista recovery envirionment. I do not have a normal windows CD. My PC is from Dell. I just want to make sure before I do anything. Windows defender is not sitting in my sys tray with an ! on it. It disappeared a couple days ago.

combofix is nothing to be worried about, however, there are other routes. Let's try an online scanner and see what it spits out.

Using Internet Explorer, visit Free Virus Scan - Kaspersky Lab

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

I ran the virus scanner you had me and it said it found some infected files. It did not show me any button to save to file. It said it was done and everything was stopped but no way to save. I can try again later this morning. I am sorry my computer is being a pain in the ****.
