Hi all.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop which is becoming progressively slower. In addition, it won't work with my Nokia phone software anymore, it seems like the drivers won't install. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no effect. Sometimes question marks appear in device manager. I had a similar problem with digital camera software and also a Bluetooth adaptor. When I boot up, before XP comes on a screen asks me to choose Profile 1 or Profile 2 if 'Ive been having trouble starting the PC. Neither option makes any difference. Also, on some document icons, they appear like when you have no program to open them, but I do.

Sorry to sound so un-tech.

Well firstly lets rule out a infection on this slow machine.

Now doing this work may take a little time,but it will be worth it.

Does it seem you have a lot of general issues with startup and running of your laptop?

Also do you have the XP CD?The reinstall disk?Just incase you need it?

What is full make and model of laptop?

And how much RAM/Memory do you have installed?To check this right click on my computer and scroll to properties and open.

How much free disk space do you have on laptop?As in your hard drive free space?

This slowness maybe just a simple case of needing more RAM and small amount of free space on hard drive.

A clear up of temp files,under system tools could you use disk cleanup and remove old files.A defragment may also help.

Have very recently defragged etc etc.

My son, who knows more than me (not difficult!) is keen to reformat. What's your opinion?

Hi,well you can run hijack this and wait for our security team to get you a fix.

Or you can run a repair,not advisable if you have an infection.

You can back up all data such as pictures,files etc to DVD/CD,floppy or an external hard drive then reformat.A reformat is good for a PC/Laptop.

But remeber you will need to download the drivers for your laptop after a reformat.

Downloading and just running the driver downloads does not mean they automaticaly install,you need to go to device manager and install from there.Some driver files are downloaded and make a folder you can locate the folder and some of the drivers in there will have self extractors.

Then update to internet explorer 7,Windows media player 11.

Before you can install some updates you wll need to download WINDOWS INSTALLER 3.1 from Microsoft website.

I would let your son reformat as long as he knows what he is doing.

Just type in box Amilo D7820 then choose notebook and operating system is XP or XP pro?

Save the link in your favs.

Make sure you check device manager and install the drivers,if you need help on any of these things please feel free to ask.

The RAM in your alaptop is fine,however when you got a few spare pounds I would upgrade to 1 gig RAM,Get son to check inside laptop to see if it has a spare RAM slot,if it does you could buy another 512 RAM,she would then fly after a reformat and updated drivers and a bit more RAM.

Buying more RAM is not a must only if you want to upgrade.
