Question HELP! - PC is really on the fritz

Dell XPS410 PC running XP Media Edition – SP2
Was running IE7, but cannot connect to internet using IE7, so now using Firefox 2.0.0.12
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14 –

PC-cillin was supposed to expire on 2-13-08, so I went in and renewed my subscription for 2 years on 2-10-08 – system had to restart when PC-cillin was installed and when it booted back up, I got a message that my date time clock had stopped

I went through set-up and tried to reset the date time clock, but apparently it didn’t take, so when PC rebooted, the date/time was sometime in 2006. I eventually got the clock set for correct date & time.

Everything was okay except if the PC was turned off, I kept getting a message the date time clock had stopped. Sometimes when I used set-up to set the date time clock, it would be okay – other times I’d have to set it 2 – 3 times before the system would actually boot up with the correct date time.

Since I’m unemployed (and looking for work) I’ve been hitting a lot of job boards lately. Just last week, I received an e-mail from some recruiter giving me a website to connect to. When I clicked on the link I got a message that indicated some application was trying to connect to the internet. I had never seen that message before, so I clicked off of it and then deleted the e-mail. The next morning I tried to connect to the internet using IE7 and I started receiving a redirect to Customize Your Settings instead of my homepage of yahoo.com.

Then I tried to click on Outlook Express and Outlook opened. The only way I could get to Outlook Express was to restart the system and as soon as everything booted up, I could use Outlook Express – after a several hours would pass, whenever I click on Outlook Express, Outlook opened again.

Today when I tried to run PC-cillin after rebooting, I noticed that I did not have current update to that program, so I clicked on Manual Update and when I did that, I got a message that said “Update unsuccessful. Check your internet connection and try again.”

I’ve tried a system restore to a previous date (a couple of times), but that didn’t seem to do any good. HELP!!

Hello and Welcome to PCHF

First, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, this holds the date, time and configuration of the system. Most times an indication it is needing replace dis the date& time is incorrect. Most times the battery is a CR2032, you can purcahse at a local Walmart or Radio Shack.

Secondly, open HJT and fix the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = dynhost.inetcam.com;register.inetcam.com;*.local
O16 - DPF: {FFBB3F3B-0A5A-4106-BE53-DFE1E2340CB1} (DLM Control) - http://dlm.tools.akamai.com/dlmanage...ex-2.2.3.4.cab

Next, Download and install CleanUp!
*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the “Temporary Files” and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
Click on the "Scan Your PC Now" button
  • Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back the Panda result log .

Geekgirl - thanks for the response...I'm okay with changing battery - but when you say open HJT and fix the following...I'm not sure what to do...do I fix just the log or do I fix something else. I've looked at HJT and I don't see where I can do anything except run the app again. I've already downloaded Cleanup and I've run the demo version to see what happens...Sorry for being so dense...

After you run a scan, you place a check mark beside the entries I have listed and click the Fix button

Ok - I've done the fixes, I've run CleanUp! - I've rebooted, but I still can't get IE-7 to run, so I tried to run Panda Active Scan with Firefox and I got the following message..." An error occurred while processing your request. Reference #97.559f4b42.1205931375.215754."

IE7 still says "cannot display the webpage"

Suggestions?

Panda will not run in Firefox, only IE

Look over this link
You receive an error message in Internet Explorer 7: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

Did you change the CMOS battery yet?
