Default Uncontrolled Restarts

So recently my comp started these surprise restarts on me. Just out of the blue, whamo. At one point I got a quicktime error (I use itunes), so I decided to upgrade qt and itunes. well when I get about 2/3 of the way thru the dl, I crash again. So I went to add'del programs in the cp and tried getting rid of itunes altogether. As soon as I got part way thru the itunes uninstall the comp restarted again! And here's spmething else...sometimes when I restart I am unable to connect to the internet.

I also did a system restore to a week before all this started happening and it still happens. As far as I can tell I've had no new software (other than the itunes/quicktime stuff) and I've added no new hardware.

I took a hijackthis snapshot which I can post if it will help. Otherwise here's what I'm running:

XP Pro
Dell Optiplex GX620
Pentium D CPU @ 2.8gig
2 gig Ram
Ethernet Connection

Thanks!

this is wierd. i would try reformating your computer. but before that i would do a scan in safe mode first.

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Could you do this prework on this link and posta back results thankyou.http://www.pchelpforum.com/hijackthi...a-prework.html

This will see if you have caught any badies on your computer.

The restarts could be a hardware issue or a bad driver install?
Do you get any errors besides the itunes one?
Do you just get a restart?or a restart with blue screen with error codes on?

nope no errors. it starts up like normal then brings me to a MS support webpage that suggests a sw or hw conflict and suggests uninstalling or system restore, etc

Hi,well we know iTunes is part of the software problem.Could you do the prework link I posted earlier please and post back results?

Try this to remove itunes.Remove quick time player also.

Completely Remove iTunes and QuickTime from Windows XP

In some rare instances, it may be required to remove all traces of iTunes and QuickTime from your computer. Use the following steps to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and associated software installed by the iTunes + QuickTime Installer.

Note: iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes.
  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Select iTunes from the list of currently installed programs, then click Remove.
  5. When asked if you would like to remove iTunes, select Yes.
  6. After the uninstallation is complete, do not restart if you are prompted to.
  7. If other entries were present for iTunes remove those as well.
  8. In Add or Remove Programs, remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed in the same fashion as iTunes was removed.
  9. In Add or Remove Programs, remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed in the same fashion as iTunes was removed.
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. After the computer restarts, open Local Disk (C in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
  12. Open the Program Files folder.
  13. Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Note: This folder may have already been deleted if iTunes was successfully removed in steps 1-7.
  14. Right-click the iPod folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
  15. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
  16. Restart your computer.
  1. Quit QuickTime Player.
  2. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Select QuickTime from the list of currently installed programs, then click Uninstall.
  5. When asked if you would like to remove QuickTime, select Yes.
  6. After the uninstallation is complete, do not restart if you are prompted to.
  7. If other entries were present for QuickTime remove those as well.
  8. Restart your computer.
  9. After the computer restarts, open Local Disk (C in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
  10. Open the Program Files folder.
  11. Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed in steps 1-7.
  12. Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
