After I typed in everything I got a message that said "No destination specified for sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\dllcache\sndvol32.exe" But i went to the control panel to check if it had been enabled again and an error message still reads "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel" Then I went to the Control Panel and it isn't anywhere to be found. I'm not sure what to do next.

  1. Click on the following link to go to Microsoft's Web site:

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
  2. At that page, scroll down and click on the appropriate download for your version of Windows XP (Home or Professional) and the service pack level that you have installed. When you click on the link to download the file, make sure you save it directly to your desktop. If you are unsure what version of Windows you have and what Service Pack is installed, you can follow these instructions to gain that information.
    1. Click on the Start button.
    2. Click on the Run menu option.
    3. In the Open: field type the following: sysdm.cpl and then click on the OK button.
    4. A screen will appear showing information about your installation. Under the System: category you should see your Windows version and the installed Service Pack. When you are done determining this information continue with Step 2.
  3. Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go. This is shown in the following image.

  4. ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

I followed the directions, but it didn't seem to do anything. After everything was complete, I let it sit for a few minutes and then I restarted the computer, but I'm still having the same problems. I think I'll just let this problem be, thanks for all your help.

I am sorry for the delay - I had internet problems. The steps should have installed the Recovery Console. With that installed, we can use the "expand" command again and hopefully fix your voulme issue. If you wish to leave it be, that is also your choice. Thanks.

Everything you've mentioned has been installed. I just tried using the 'expand' command again and the same message "No destination specified..." appeared. Should I try something else? Thanks.

1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.

Now you should be able to use the expand command.
