The scanner did indeed find things - about 6-8 which it deleted - after which the computer would no longer boot. In the middle of the boot sequence, it would crash and restart - much the same as when the registry was scanned. So, I guess this tool did find the culprit, but was incomplete in its removal. I tried going back to a checkpoint but that too resulted in a crash. I had to reload the OS and spent all day updating and reinstalling stuff. I suppose this was bound to happen at some point - it would have been nice to have been able to identify what was causing the problem and how to clean it.

Thanks for all your help. If you have any thoughts on how to prevent this in the future, I would greatly appreciate your input.
