Default Re: HIjackThis help/ pc runs slow

HI-- to rid yourself of bits and pieces of failed security app uninstallations-- like Symantec/Norton Remnants... it is sometimes necessary to boot into "safe mode" .This loads only very basic drivers and software-- no internet access... you may want to print these instructions

Then open regedit-- Start/ run / Regedit
find and delete any folders labelled Symantec/NIS/ Norton etc...
then go to the top of regedit window--click edit /find/ enter Symantec
then a separate search for Norton-- whatever you want to remove.

Be very cautious-- delete only ones you are sure of...

The folder deletions will get rid of 90% of it-- the reboot normally-- and run a registry scanner to be sure if you wish.

Security progs in general andNorton Products in particular get their tentacles into every corner of your PC so when you uninstall it is best to use their uninstaller. Still not perfect-- maybe you did use it- I don't know--

In a security app that most just keep because it "came with the computer"-- it's good in a way --that it is so thoroughly installed ... as many new users would be infected in short order without it.

I have fought to uninstall their stuff from many a PC -- many times.
Sometimes I have had to take drastic measures like those above-- it can happen with any firewall/AV-- or any such app. It just seems to happen more with their products.

If you follow this --let us know how you make out, please

I booted in safe mode and ran regedit. I actually found quite a few remnants of symantec/norton. I deleted and restarted then ran hijackthis again. Here are the results but still slow performance.

Default Re: HIjackThis help/ pc runs slow

I was having Winsock problems here: sorry.
Can't help... if my own PC won't stay connected-- seems fixed now.

I would suggest unistalling the NOD 32--also-- see if performance improves-- then reinstall it-- it's possible that conflicts between the 2 AV 'hosed' a few settings-- which you may not ever find-- or that NOD files got corrupted by Norton/the uninstall .

This is why 2 AV's are not recommended-- they can be a bear to remove-- similar functions plus the nature of those functions (virus-detection is very deep stuff--therefore deep-rooted problems)-- can cause very difficult-to-find issues.
