Question [Answered] Fresh OS install, please check my logs.

I just did a fresh install of WIndows XP Pro (SP2) on a new Sata HDD. I then slaved my old 200 gig HDD where I had all my previous data backed up (old hdd was used as a slave prior, and never contained an OS).

Occasionally still, my PC will totally freeze up on me. I don't get a blue screen, the screen stays the same, but I cant move anything with the mouse, keystrokes and ctrl+alt+delete won't do anything, and I am forcedc to shut off the PC by holding down the power switch.

The only other hardware I have installed since the new OS install was an M-Audio/Delta 24/96 soundcard (I was sure to uninstall the driver for the MoBo soundcard and disable it in bios before installing the Delta soundcard)

Anyway, I went through the pre-work and am attatching the scan logs, if someone could please look them over for me to see if there is something that could possibly be the cause of these freeze ups, it would be great

Heya Scorpios,

Click my Memtest86 link and run that. It is a free memory diagnostic tool. If that passes, I would try reseating your memory sticks and also testing your memory sticks in different combinations. When units lock up like that in a total freeze, it is quite often a memory problem (in my experience). Usually it is errors in memory. And sometimes it is that different brands/models of memory just don't work well together.

Also, try dusting out your unit. Especially around the CPU heat sink, power supply, and fans. It is possible dust could be shorting something out.

I guess another thing to check if you built the computer yourself or if it was custom built, is to make sure you have risers separating your motherboard from your case. I have seen in a good number of cases people have the motherboard mashed right against the case and screwed in. There has to be a space.

Hope that helps! One of our security staff will check your logs ASAP as well

Thanks Wadd, I did notice my PC was very dusty when I opened it up to install a new HDD. I will pick up some compressed air tommorow and give it a thorough cleaning.

I am checking out the MemTest86 software now, but not sure if I understand how it works. Do I have to burn the image file to a CD-Rom and use it to boot with, or can I use the file from a virtual CD-Rom such as Daemon Tools?

You need to burn the image to a CD or DVD and then boot to it. It will start running automatically...well at least the version I have does.
