I'm sure my wife will use the pc today and I'll ask her to report back when I get home from work. If she says it's ok I'll close this one down and we will donate something even if it's later in the month when we both get paid. Thanks for the other tips, I'll try those tonight as well.

It ain't good My wife said her session has frozen a few times and I just came into my session to tell you about it and my session froze too !

I checked out the XP packet you mentioned but I haven't really had time to learn it yet. It did seem to indicate there wewre three versions of AVG running at the same time though ?

let's see what's starting with your pc:

Create a Startup List
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

thanks,

v

what I would do is go through the msconfig file and uncheck everything that you know what it is (except for antivirus); stuff like real (don't need that to start at startup) anything adobe, anything microsoft office, anything without a name, etc.....stuff like vsnpstd2.exe is used for your camera, and if you aren't using your camera at that time, you certainly don't need it running......if you have any questions about an app, just google the .exe on the end of the string next to the checkbox. You may need to extend the bar at the top to the right to be able to view the entire string, but then you can see what teh actually extension is.

when you reboot, you will get a screen saying 'you've messed with the system config utility'; on the bottom left there is a tick box that states 'do not show this at startup'. Tick that, and you'll be good to go.

Let me know how it's running afterwards....it should boot significantly faster.

Thanks,

v
