Hey Allen,

Great place to start, thank you for following the instructions perfectly.

First of all please download Shoot the Messenger from my signature. Run it, it is a simple app that disables the unnecessary Windows Messenger, which leaves you vulnerable to PopUp attacks.

Next please run a full system scan with Spybot S&D, for some reason AVG was unable to remove the Hitbox infection you have. If Spybot doesn't detect it, please post back, you really do want to get that one off of your system, and we may have to do it manually.

Next you can fix the following with HijackThis,
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = TOOLBAR - Comcast.net
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = Live Search
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = Comcast.net
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = Comcast.net
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = Live Search
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = Live Search
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = Comcast.net
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = TOOLBAR - Comcast.net
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Windows Internet Explorer provided by Comcast
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

None of them are particularly serious tho, and I think that your problem may be hardware related. Have you run memtest? Have you checked your temps lately? Have you installed any new hardware or software that could be causing a conflict? Have you checked your Event Viewer for System errors? If you are reasonably sure of the time of the shut downs, the Event Viewer should give you some insight. How old is the PC? It is possible that you are experiencing a PSU that is going.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

OK. Here's where I stand.
AVG Antispy-doesn't work for me.Won't clean anything.I have tried it before and same thing happened.I just get an error message.

Messenger is disabled.

Spybot doesn't find the Hitbox. It's in the FEBE folder(Firefox extension backup extension). It's in the profiles.I can't open that folder-has a .fbu extension.Don't know what would open that.

Removed the items you listed to remove with Hijackthis. That changed my IE home page to the default MSN.I would rather keep the comcast home page.I did change that back.

Event Logs-the only errors I find are from the other night when I was in safe mode doing the prework.Otherwise I don't see any that relate to the reboots.

Computer-about 15 months old-self built.Processor temp. is 45C(113F).This was just after doing the spybot scan tonight.Nothing new or different about the hardware or software.

The random rebooting hasn't happened in a few days.

Please explain memtest.Run command? Thanks for the help. Allen

Hey Allen,

Hmmmm, that issue with AVG concerns me. Since the Hitbox infection has holed up in an inaccessible file, I would delete that backup file. FireFox should create another one when that one is gone.

Yes that memory tester is similar, here is the one that we generally recommend, Memtest86. Scroll down to the .iso image, and save it to your desktop, you will need to have a CD burning software that can create a bootable CD (Please let us know if you need more detailed instructions on how to do this.). Then you boot up using the CD, and allow it to run, it will test for any bad sectors that may be on your RAM.

Changing your homepage back to Comcast is fine. I only had you clean those out because you had so many, and they were conflicting. It was an offhand chance that the conflicts could be causing the problem.

Let's see what Memtest shows, if anything, and go from there. Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
