Hey Guys,

@Kohl - Did you try getting into Safe Mode without Networking?

Do you have an Operating System CD? If so, please put it into your drive, and go to Start, Run, and type in sfc /scannow and hit enter. It is very important to type it exactly as written with the space between sfc and the /. This is a utility that will search for and replace damaged or missing system files. Once that has completed, try booting into Safe Mode with Networking again.

Looking forward to your reply,

I tried safe mode without networking - that's not working either. I don't have the system disks here, so I can't easily run the scan that you mention, but I can borrow my boyfriend's disks and run it soon I hope.

I the mean time is there anything else that I can try, or should I just wait for the system disks?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Hey Kohl,

Sorry M8, I'm afraid that there are damaged system files that will need to be repaired if we are to get your scans done. See if you can get those disks ASAP.

Looking forward to your reply,

Aarg - I managed to borrow the disks, but it seems the service pack 2 disk (I'm prompted to insert it) isn't the specific Home Edition that it prompts for, so it doesn't seem to be able to complete the scan.

How frustrating! I'm going to look at backing up everything to re-format if I'm unable to find the correct disk to use - doh!

I'm so sorry, that is really frustrating. If you hadn't been having all of the malware problems, we might be able to direct the sfc utility to a file on the PC, but at this point I would be concerned about cross contamination. I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this. Let us know what you decide to do Kohl, and we'll walk you through it.

Looking forward to your reply,

Thanks again for your help - it is frustrating isn't it! But I'm going to back up my important files and reformat the computer this evening, and do everything possible to stop anything similar sneaking into it again!

Hey Kohl,

I know, I have been there, . It's a real pain. OK, let us know if you need any help. I would also recommend reading the article in my signature, PCHF, Protect Your PC, as well as the After Work, ( a bit more technical), in the HJT forum.

Looking forward to hearing how your reinstall turns out.
