few questions.

1. Is this xp home or pro?
2. Is this part of a network at the house?
3. Are you running wireless?
4. When was the last time you did any diagnostic work on this machine, such as scanning for viruses or defragging the hard drive or anything like that?

if any of those are 'yes', then we could be going somewhere. Then again, if all are 'no', chances are you either are infected with something or have a corrupt profile. Regardless, it should be readily fixable.

windows xp prof service pack 2
no network only computer in house
only computer in house
not wireless
diag and defrag 1 wk ago
have had this prob off and on for 2 years
i am only person who ever uses

can you right click on the my computer icon > manage > expand (click the plus sign) on 'shared folders' under system tools > and tell me what is under shares, sessions, and open files.

In mine, although I am running xp home, I only have 3 entries in shares; IPC$, print$, and shareddocs, and nothing in the other two folders.

Has this machine ever been on a domain, or has it always been a 'home' pc?

shares has 3 enties: admin$ C$ IPC$
NOTHING IN THE OTHERS
PC HAS BEEN A HOME PC DELL INSPIRON 1150 2 YEARS OLD BOUGHT NEW, ONLY USED BY ME
