Hey Dan,
I'm so sorry, I've been ill that last couple of days, and haven't been on the PC. OK, if AVG found anything, it sounds as if it was cleaned.
Yes, there are a lot of programs running in the background, but none of them is harmful. Depending on your specs they could be slowing your computer down, but that wouldn't have happened all of a sudden, the way you described your slowdown.
Please download CCleaner, RegSupremePro and SpySweeper from my signature. We are going to do some heavy duty cleaning, and one more pass for traces of virus'. Please update CCleaner and SpySweeper. Make sure that your System Restore is still disabled, and boot into Safe Mode.
First right-click on My Computer, and select Explore. Click on Tools, Folder Options, and click on the View tab. Make sure that Display the contents of System folders is selected, then click on Apply to All Folders. Close the window.
Completely empty your Norton's Protected Recycle Bin. Empty the Norton Quarantie again.
Next open CCleaner, make sure that all options are selected, including Advanced, answer OK or Yes to all warnings. Click on Analyze, then Run Cleaner. Repeat this process until either zero entries are available to clean, or the same entries keep showing up and cannot be cleaned. Identify these files.
Navigate to the location of any files CCleaner could not clean. Right click on them and choose Properties. Uncheck Read Only, if it is selected, and manually delete them. Write down any files that you cannot manually delete to post back here.
Next click on Issues, Scan for Issues, then Fix Selected Issues. Let it fix all that it finds, you can name the backup today's date. Repeat this proceedure until no futher issues are found.
Now run SpySweeper, make sure that under Options, Sweep, all items under Custom Sweep are selected, then click on Sweep, start Custom Sweep. Save the log to post back here.
Finally, run RegSupremePro, it will want to create a backup of your cache, let it. Click on the Registry Cleaner tab, and select Aggressive. When it has finished, click on Select, and choose All. Click on Fix, and allow it to fix everything that it finds. Repeat this process until no further issues are detected.
OK, boot back into Normal Mode, and post the SpySweeper log, and the names of any "difficult" files. Looking forward to your reply,
TTFN
