Default [Closed] Please help! "Explorer.exe- no disk" + other problems in XP

Hello-
I'm new to this forum, so please bear with me. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and recently got a DSL connection. For the past few days I have been a victim of a desktop message saying "Explorer.exe- no disk" in either drive A: or drive D:. I have to click on it about a dozen times and it will go away, only to return at various times. In addition, I have been getting popups galore in Internet Explorer; I've run Spybot, AdAware and SpySweeper (all of which have found things), but the situation has not improved. I cannot run these programs in any of the Safe Modes, as the boot seems to hang after loading mup.sys- the logon screen will come on but the desktop will not open. As if that weren't enough, programs have gotten slow to load and web pages scroll painfully slow (drag and drops are also very slow). I am assuming this is due to infection (although some problems seem to be memory-related). Any help that can be offered would be very, very much appreciated.

Thanks
Jdub

Edit: Please only post HJT and spywear logs as attachments, Thanks,
LGW

Hey Jdub,

Welcome to PCHF, we have a great team of techs here, and I am sure that we will be able to help you get rid of the RLMs, (rotton little monsters), Before I look at your HJT log though, could you please follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, and post back with both the AVG log as well as the new HJT log, and the SpySweeper log if you can locate it.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

You are not wrong in saying that your computer is infected.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Run a scan with AVG Anti-spyware, and clean anything found. Save the log to somewhere convenient.
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log and the AVG Anti-spyware log.

Chiawaikian-
Thanks for your advice. Will do as you ask; there is one problem though- I still cannot get into Safe Mode (although I can get into Safe Mode with Networking). I can get to the logon screen for Safe Mode, but after I enter the administrator account I either get no desktop at all (only a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners- no icons or taskbar) or the taskbar & icons will appear briefly then disappear. However, Safe Mode with Networking starts right up- is it OK to use this mode to run the applications you suggest?

I'm not sure what the cause of this problem is, although it may be somehow related to my video card drivers. Prior to last night, I was not even able to get into networking Safe Mode; after examining my Device Manager I found that the video drivers were missing. After reinstalling them, I was able to get into networking Safe Mode- not regular Safe Mode, though.

Thank You again for your help
Jdub
