Default [Resolved] PC Performance Deterioration

Hi

I hope somebody can help me - my PC was working fine until fairly recently when its performance deteriorated significantly. It just seems to take much longer to open files, applications, etc., and it occasionally freezes completely.

I have 62% free space on my hard drive, so I don't think it's a shortage of capacity? I use Disk Cleaner, Disk Defragmenter, Spy Sweeper, Symantec Anti-Virus, and RegScrubXP every week, so as far as I can telle there is nothing on my system that shouldn't be there.

But that's where my technical expertise ends, and I suspect there's something going on which I can't see.

Any ideas?

If I need to provide more info, I'd appreciate any help on how I can actually find it out - I am a novice as you will see from my comments above!

Thanks

Hello Ron,

Welcome to PCHF.

Common causes are performance decrease is normally related to malware, or software running in the background. Can you think of any software you may have installed recently that would co-inside with the time your PC started to slow down?

Also, can you follow PCHF Prework, and submit you HJT log back here. A member of the security team will then analyse and make sure your PC is free of malware.

Upgrader - thanks for the welcome and moving me to the correct area of the site.

Madmonkey - thanks also for the welcome. I've now completed the prework and attach the log.

Any help would be very much appreciated. The last two items I remember installing are SpySweeper (which did seem to slow things down) and Sky Broadband, which didn't work as I expected and which I've since uninstalled.

Thanks again

I'm not too keen on SpySweeper myself. Sit tight, I've informed a member of security who will hopefully analyse your log in a bit.

Hi
There is no sign of any malware.Maybe take out Sweeper and see if that helps. Also try and do the same with that SxS as well. That could also be a cause...

Thanks Pancake - I will remove SpySweeper and see what happens. Have you any recommendations for a replacement if it turns out that SpySweeper is causing the problem?

Also - how do I remove the "SxS" - and what is it?!
