Unhappy [Resolved] shut down problem

Hello everyone, I am new to this site, and computing in general so please bear with me. Lately I have had a problem shutting down my computer in the normal manner, and usually end up using the tower button. This problem has been happening off and on for some time now, but more recently of late. At first I thought it was related to MusicMatch, after researching a strange "shellcon hidden window" message. I had unchecked some startup items using spysweeper's startup list utility, mimboot, among others, and at first it seemed to work. But once again it did not want to turn off last night. I am running McAfee Security Suite 2006, and Webroot Spysweeper, scans using these products detect nothing. I guess I should have mentioned that the spot it hangs up at is the "Windows is shutting down" screen , I have tried waiting for what seems like hours (probably 4 or 5 minutes) but nothing happens. any advice, and hand holding, will be greatly appreciated, as you can see I am so inexperienced I don't even know how to create paragraphs. I also have some other problems, do I post each one seperately? Thanks in advance.

Hi countryboy,

Welcome to PCHF.

This problem completely depends on what version of Windows your using?

With this version of Windows it normally relates to something running in the background preventing Windows from shutting down. It maybe a good idea to run PCHF Prework to make sure this is not malware first. Post your hijackthis.log back here, and a member of security will check and let you know of any problems.

I was going through the "prework" instructions, and as I went to turn off system restore it informed me that all restore points would be deleted. Is this perfectly safe? Do I need to back up my registry, and other data? Sorry for being so ignorant.

This stop any gremlins that hide in system restore from surfacing again. It is the only way to go if you want to start to be bug free...

I am sorry once again for being so ignorant. Can someone please tell me how to place HijackThis! in its own folder. When I try to run it , it tells me it is in a "temporary folder". I tried to create a new folder and drag it into it, and now it is in a folder within a folder. If you can stop laughing long enough to explain the procedure to me I'd be much obliged.
