Hi there Yankeedoodle.

Run HijackThis , select to do a "system scan only" and then place a check beside each of the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BC743401-6E49-BCDB-763F-F82A72F74793} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
Now first close all windows and browsers other then HiJackThis , then click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Then manually delete this file:
C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

Go to "control panel/Appearance and Themes/change the desktop background/Customize desktop/web tab" and see if anything is loaded there.
If it is , then delete it. Also remove the tick in "lock desktop items" if present.

Reboot youre pc, and if you still have problems with your desktop then run this fix:

Download, unzip, and dubbel click on it, and allow it to be added to the registry.
http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/regfi...desktopfix.zip

After that post a new Hjt log please.

Ok two things. I can't find C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

I also cannot find Appearance and Themes but I know what you are talking about and I went to the web tab yesterday but no site was checked there. I went to the registry (don't ask me what I did I am a novice lol) but I took the advice of someone else and the desktop background went back to normal.
The only problem now is all the stuff hijackthis has found. Also everything runs a lot slower now.
So right now I guess I just can't C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

See if this helps:

Set "hidden files and folders" to show:

For XP:
  1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
  4. If you see a warning message, click Yes.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click OK.

By windows explorer I am guessing the one on docs and setts works ok.
I did what you said but I still can't seem to find C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
