Default [Fixed] Pop-ups- Please check my friends log

Hi, my friend is getting a dodgy looking windows notification pop-up. I think it's claiming to be a firewall. He's also getting error messages whenever windows launches saying that the system has recovered from something bad. Can you check over the log?
Thanks

Does it say what the product name is?

Right I've just got some new info. The error message when windows launches has stopped occurring and it looks as though this may have been a seperate issue. The pop-ups are grey 'messenger service' boxes saying there are problems detected and to go to www.regfixit.com, doctor cleaner, www.the32fix.com, ect.

You can turn off the Messenger service like this:

Right click on My Computer - select Manage -> Services and Applications -> Services -> find the Messenger service in the right hand pane and set to STOP and Manual

Those types of popups shouldn't come back...

Right thanks I'll give that a go. What are those pop-ups? Where do they come from and do they appear in the hijack log?

They are sent via the Network Messenger service - a service that is on by default in XP. It carries network messages on internal (as well as external) networks and your friend doesn't need it!

Hi dogbiscuit

I would advise a visit to the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2) (SP2).. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to infections.

**Note** If your having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from..
