Default [Fixed] I've been infected!!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help, I 've self inflicted myself with a virus after downloading a program off Limewire mistakenly believing it was something else.

Anyway, the symptoms so far are...

- Can't open Task Manager (Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator)
- The START>RUN feature isn't visible in the start menu, but if I do find another way to access regedit.exe I get the same error 'Regedit.exe has been disabled by your administrator)
- I don't use Outlook, but it's is installed on my computer and it alerted me that another program was trying to access the email addresses. Obviously I said no, but it is worrying as I have some important email addresses on my Outlook.

Anyway, those are the symptoms so far, and also when I try and open hijackthis it just freezes so I can only assume it is virus related. I've run adaware, avast antivirus etc but no luck.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated, thanks!

Just a little update...

Now on the bottom right hand corner of the screen on the taskbar, next to the time it looks like this ??????

By that I mean there are 6 question marks after the time on the taskbar. If I scroll over it shows the date like the time would.

Hi littlejones,

This doesn't sound like much fun mate. Can you follow the instructions in the *prework* link in my sig as best you can, and post the logs that you can do. I will move this post to 'hijack-this' and inform one of our security guys. Please keep us updated with your progress.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have managed to get a program off the net which lets me access regedit and I found instructions to activate task manager again. I've also managed to get hijackthis working after I did this.

You can see the log here (or via attachment): www.littlejones.co.uk/hijackthis.log

One more symptom I've noticed today. If I click START there is no option to Shutdown or Restart, just Logoff. If I go to the Task Manager which I can now access to shutdown the options are greyed out. I'm assuming I need to do something in Regedit but I wouldn't know where to start.

Thanks again (I'll check out the link in your sig now)
