Unhappy [Fixed] Cannot change computer background

For some reason I am unable to change my computer background. I detected spyware on my computer, so I downloaded "Windows Defender" and fixed that problem (hopefully). However, I still cannot change my computer background. When I start my computer, I can briefly see my old computer background (a picture) but then it disappears after a minute and the background becomes (and stays) white. When I go to "control panel" and then "display properties" to the "desktop" tab, I can see all the options to change the background but it will not let me change anything. I don't know much about computers so if someone could please give me simple directions that would be great. Thanks!!

Hey CPC,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a terrific team of techs and I know we can help you get that background back.

First of all, it sounds as if you may have more malware problems. Please carefully follow the instructions in my signature for PreWork, and post the resulting logs for ewido and HijackThis back here.

We'll be able to guide you through cleaning your computer completely, and then make sure you are completely protected so you can get your settings to stay.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Yup , good change there is more malware on there. But see if this works in the mean time to get youre desktop back:

Go to "control panel/Appearance and Themes/change the desktop background/Customize desktop/web tab" and see if anything is loaded there.
If it is , then delete it.
Also remove the tick in "lock desktop items" if present.

Hi-

I tried Joe's suggestion, but it wouldn't let me delete the one line under the web tab.

Ladygreenwitch- I have attached the logs for ewido and HijackThis. Thanks for your help!

Hi CPC, I'm back,

I have a couple of questions, first, when you ran HJT (HijackThis) were you in Safe Mode? or had you manually shut down a bunch of running programs? The list of running programs looks short to me.

Secondly, I see lots of entries to Mcaffee, but nothing directly to the AV part of it, however, I see that you are running an AV from Yahoo. If you are in fact running both, you will have a conflict problem.

Please download RegSupremePro from my signature, also, download and run Shoot the Messenger, to disable Windows Messenger, it is unnecessary and can leave you suseptable to popup attacks.

Then you can fix the following in HijackThis

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vdrdpup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdrdpup.dll,RegisterVirtualCha nnel
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
Now run RegSupremePro, it will want to make a back up of your cache, let it. When it has finished, click on the Registry Cleaner tab and select Aggressive. Once it's done, click on Select, and choose All. Click on Fix, and let it fix everything that it finds.

Run CCleaner one more time then restart your PC.

Now retry Joe's instructions for restoring your background, run a new HJT log, and post back here.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN
