Default [Fixed] Severe Constant Slowdown - Windows XP home edition

Hello

My PC is a Pentium4 3.20GHz, GeForce 5900 Ultra and 512MB ram

Since yesterday my PC has become practically unusable. Every time I open a new program, task manager or any type of window it takes around 2min before anything happens (it even does this if I double-click the windows clock in the system tray). Mostly programs run smoothly once they finally are running, provided I don't begin executing other tasks at the same time.
Until this severe slowdown started it has always been running perfectly with no slowdowns at all. I have checked if it could have been fragmentation but the hard-disk has practically no fragmentation at all.
The only changes I have made to the PC within this timeframe is updating my graphicsdriver and installing half-life2 with its accompanying anti-piracy software "steam".
I have scanned my PC with panda titanium 2006, ad-aware and microsoft antispyware - all of them updated but nothing has popped up.
I have no understanding of "HijackThis" logs but I have downloaded it and made a log which I will attach here.
I sure hope you guys can help me because this seriously sucks hehe - really appreciate any help you might provide

Hya Martin , welcome to PCHF.

Before fixing things with HijackThis Please Do the Following:

Show hidden files and folders:

For XP:
  1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
  4. If you see a warning message, click Yes.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click OK.

Disable System Restore to prevent re-infection.
(If you have/use it. You can turn it back on when youre PC is clean).

How to disable system restore:

WinXP.
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

Please download CCleaner

Then boot in safemode (hit f8 when booting up) and fix these with hjt:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\system32\setuv42a.exe,C:\WI NDOWS\system32\h323mdev.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows Session Manager Subsystem] C:\windows\smss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows Logon Process] C:\windows\winlogon.exe
Then delete the files in bold , and run Ccleaner.

After that reboot and post a new hjt log please.

Hi Joe

I've done all the things you asked me to do now. I'm writing this 5min after the reboot and so far the system now seems to be running perfectly
I've made another hj log and attached it to this reply.

Thx a lot for the help - really appreciate it
