Default [Fixed] XP font folder freezing Explorer

Hi - hoping someone out there may be able to help.

A problem appeared today with my computer. When I attempted to load Photoshop 7.0, the program froze while it attemped to initialize the fonts on my system. At first I thought it was a problem with Photoshop, but upon reinstalling the program, and attempting to reload it, it froze again while loading fonts.

I then opened up Explorer and navigated to the font folder. When I double-clicked on the folder it froze Explorer. I've tried multiple times. I cannot open the Font folder and each time it freezes Explorer.

Anyone have any ideas? Help is much appreciated.

Best,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a staff of wonderful techs with a wide variety of computer knowledge and I am sure that we will be able to help you figure out your font issue.

First of all, is this a new problem?

If so, can you please follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature and post the two resulting logs back here. That will give us a good place to start troubleshooting.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Wow, thank you LGW for replying (this problem has been killing me for two days).

All of my problems began when a virus appeared on my machine last week. It installed the "idemlog.exe" file on my computer that created a floating ad on my desktop. The file did not show up in Windows Explorer, but my Sygate firewall detected it, allowing me to block it from accessing the internet.

I ran Norton, which did not pick up any viruses(!), although it did give me two prompts later on that said it had detected a virus but could not quarantine or delete the file. The file would attempt to load when Windows started up, but would quit moments later, so I was living with the problem for the time being. Later I stumbled upon a few sites with links to online virus scans that were detecting the "idemlog.exe" problem, so yesterday I ran virus scans at Pandasoft and then at Micro Trend. Both found and removed additional viruses and malware/spyware.

Somewhere (yesterday or the night before) between running these online scans, as well as CCleaner, and Hijackthis (I must have tried everything), disabling system restore, etc., my font folder seems to have frozen permanently. I have also attempted to open the fonts folder in safe mode, to no avail. I did successfully manage to run a Norton scan on the Fonts directory, but I cannot load Photoshop 7 or CS or the font untility in Control Panel. I can however browse fonts in Word.

I'll run PreWork and report back. Thank you!!

Ryan

:cheesy: Hey RyanK,

Sorry that took so long, I keep getting called away. There is very little showing on either the HijackThis log or the ewido log.

However, I would like you to download Counter Spy from my signature, and run a full system scan, letting it fix everything that it finds. Then please do another ewido log, I am hoping that Counter Spy will be able to remove the one item that ewido has not been able to. Please save the log to post back here.

Next run HijackThis again, and fix the following items.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {3A3DCDF4-4423-685F-B856-A33EBBD47083} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: BTTray.lnk = ?
Then run CCleaner again, run HijackThis and post the new log.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN
