To create the floppy , doubleclick on "install.bat" and follow the prompts.

And is youre pc setup to boot from floppy? Restart youre pc and keep tapping "del" to get in youre bios. Once there make sure the "boot order" is set to A=floppy B=cd/dvd C=HD.

And im pretty sure it are the correct sound drivers but i'll double check.

EDIT, there are two downloads on that Creative page i linked to , one is the driver and the other is an update for that driver and needs to be installed after the driver itself. Did you notice that?

Hi guys,

Sound card: Whenever I tried to install the drivers, it would say I didn't have a Soundblaster card and it didn't install the drivers at all. Just shut down the program, and that was that. But I went back and redownloaded the 128 and everything seemed to go okay this time. Didn't get any errors at any rate.

Here's one of the event files. The other is too big to attach. Over 112K.

In Boot sequencing -- which must be same as boot order? since I don't find anything saying specifically boot order -- I have two hard drives, the floppy drive and the cd/dvd drive listed in that order. I don't see a way to change it. One of the hard drives is external, although I do have two internal hard drives. One day, however, the computer quit seeing the second one. No clue how to fix that, either . . . except ditch it. :computer_

In any case, I can't boot off the floppy. Made a cd with the other option, but that didn't work either.

Hey Neenahdee,

Sorry this is being such a pain for you. Yes Boot Sequencing is the same as Boot Order, and there has to be a way to change which is booted first. When you are in your BIOS, use your arrow keys to navigate to your floppy drive. You will more than likely have some basic instructions somewhere on the screen, if not with the Floppy selected, try using the left and right arrows to see if you can change the boot order that way.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Thanks, ladygreenwitch,

We found it! But the test didn't work. Only got a bunch of numbers and letters scrolling down the left side on a black screen. I'm going to try my son's disk since he had no problem with his.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Neenah

 Hey Neenahdee!

I have in my work a machine that does the same, the pc tun off regulary, it is a athlon machine, and the cause was that cpu goes very hot, we need to enter new temp. settings in pc healt options at the bios. and we install an extra fan. i think you problem is driver setings.

If you have a pci sound card is a good idea to place it in another PCI slot.

did you have a clean hard drive to make a fresh install to test all ur pc hardware? remove any PCI card, disable any on board audio card and do a fresh XP install that, intall one by one any PCI hardware to detect any faulty item. install your dimms one by one to ensure there is not any failire...

if all works fine, you can make a fresh install with your primary hard drive... if still get same errors the mother board could have a failure.

tell us if have good results.

Hi Oender!

Thanks for your response!

I've updated my drivers and ran a memory test. The test revealed that I have one bad slot, so I removed one stick of memory. So far, it hasn't crashed, and I've been working steadily for about eight hours now. I'm going to push it after supper and run all my usual programs at once to see what happens. Although, generally, I could just have one program or browser running for it to crash. I'm counting myself pretty fortunate right now!

The driver that actually was giving trouble, apparently, was the video card driver. My boys tell me the card is a dinosaur and I should upgrade. I'm in the process of choosing a card now.

I probably do need more cooling, but I don't think my case allows for another fan. I'm thinking of upgrading the case in a week or so. I think I'm going to get the same model as my son has but without the clear side. Just not sure how you figure out if the mobo will fit the type case chosen. He has a cheaper board from the same company as mine is, MSI, so I'm thinking it should be okay. Later I want to upgrade to a better board and processor. Probably will need a new graphics card for that since the boards all seem to be AGP now. I won't wimp on that too much. I'm sure I could probably resell the PCI card and get some of my money back. The new board and processor are definitely down the road a piece, though.

We will be doing a reformat and fresh install at some point very soon. I need to back up my stuff again first.

I don't have any onboard cards on this board. The guy we usually get to build our systems advises against getting boards with that stuff on it. So we're guided by his adivice.

Thanks for the tips!

NeenahDee

 Hey Neenah,

Your PJ sure is a help to you. What a sweetie. Have you posted the specs to your MOBO before? If not, can you post them here? We have some box experts who should be able to tell you if they fit or not.

Glad to hear that this is starting to resolve, that bad RAM slot can be a real pain.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN
