I hate having to reformat and reinstall, you have my sympathies. Sometimes there is nothing else you can do.

If you come across having to do this again, I am going to recommend that you use this really wonderful partition system written by our guy Merlin. I used it and it is amazing how much better Windows XP runs this way.

Make sure to do all of your updates, and reconfigure your protective software.
