Default [Fixed] Alcan, Mugly and a missing system folder

Hi.

I'm running XP Home SP2, and I got two worms (Alcan.A and Mugly.I) and a lot of adware yesterday.? My antivirus program (Avast) took care of most of it, and XSoft Spy handled the rest, or so I thought.? However, since those things got onto my computer, taskmanager doesn't work -- nothing happens at all.? I've tried CTRL+ALT+DEL, right clicking on the taskbar, running it from the Run command, and selecting it in the system folder.? Nothing works.? It simply doesn't open.

Regedit has problems too.? It won't run from the Run command, giving me an Illegal Instructions error.

I've researched the problem online, and all the advice includes looking in the system32 folder.? But that folder seems to be invisible, even when using XP's Search function.? I have folder options set to view hidden folders.? The system32 folder is simply not there.? But when I run XSoft Spy, it scans that folder.

I tried Trend Micro's Housecall, which says I've got the Mugly.I worm, but comes back "Clean Failed". It lists files associated with mugly.I as being present in the system32 folder, which, as I've mentioned, I can't find.? Avast reports my system as clean, XSoft Spy now reports my system as clean, Trend's online scanner and its sysclean both say I've got mugly, and Hijack This shows nothing that's not supposed to be there.? I'm guessing the actual virus is gone, but some of the files remain, but they remain in a folder that I can't locate.

Anyone care to take a shot at this?

Welcome to PCHF.

Turn OFF System Restore - but beware, you will lose all of your previous restore points

Grab CWS Shredder from us here: http://www.pchelpforum.com/component...0/topic,498.0/ install and run it.

Then follow these instructions: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/da...alinstructions

Try a trial version of Norton/AVG to completely clean it up.

Hi, Hengis, and thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, it didn't work.

CWShredder didn't find anything to shred. I disabled Avast and installed NAV from my SystemWorks CD, rebooted to safe mode, ran LiveUpdate, and it found one file infected with W32.Spybot, which it deleted. Then I checked the registry entries. None of those listed were present. I did find the system32 folder (my mistake, I had one setting wrong in folder options), and found the bogus files listed on some of the information pages, which I deleted. But when I rebooted to normal mode, the same problems occurred, and when I checked the system32 folder, those bogus files were back.

What would you suggest next?

I would suggest running HiJackThis and posting your log here.

Default Re: Alcan, Mugly and a missing system folder

Ok, stuff to "fix":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O23 - Service: ATI Smart - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati2sgag.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: avast! Mail Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: avast! Web Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe" /service (file missing)

And unless you know what these are, I would suggest "fixing" them aswell...
O23 - Service: ExtremeZ-IP File Server for Macintosh (ExtremeZ-IP) - Group Logic - C:\Program Files\Group Logic\ExtremeZ-IP\ExtremeZ-IP.EXE
O18 - Protocol: offline-8876480 - {FC733F38-4DEE-40C9-8A96-D80C32E6687A} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll (ALL OF THE LOGITECH ENTRIES IF NOT KNOWN)
