I couldnt find a forum that dealt with security AND wireless internet settings.
My computer has Norton on it, working fine. I also have a wireless connection to another computer in the house that also has Norton on it. What I want to know is how I can protect this connection. Anybody on my street could access my wireless connection. What do I need to do? Is there such thing as a wireless firewall?
I have set my WEP to increase security but I cant find a function to change my password and username from admin/admin so its pretty pointless doing anything else until I get these changed. How do I do this? Im using a Dell 2350 router and been all over the internet looking for a simple guide but no help, even when someone asks "how can I CHANGE my user/password" someone will reply with an entirely useless answer of "your password will be admin/admin".

Hello & Welcome dodoegg!
Yikes! I've been through the manual for your router and also do not see the option to change the User login & Password. That doesn't seem reasonable though.... On my Linksys - the option is under either Configuration or Security. Might you have screen shots that you could provide of those areas?

I have found it but the problem hasnt really been resolved. It was hidden under administration so I have managed to change it. But what concerns me is that when I connected my other PC to the wireless it didnt ask for a password or username. It gave me 3 options to connect to, which Im guessing means it is picking up my wireless signal along with 2 neigbours'. When I connected it didnt ask for a username/ password. Shouldn't it have asked for user/pass even when they were admin/admin?

Your WEP password should be something other than the router login & password. Usually just a single entry for the WEP key and yes - you should have been prompted if you selected your WEP secured network.

I hope then, for my future security, that when I connected to the wireless signal earlier, I was connecting to a neighbour rather than mine, because whatever I did connect to lets me get onto the internet no questions asked. I have re-named my router now so when I next connect I should be able to see mine rather than 3 device names.
I have done 4 WEP entries so Ill try to access it as soon as I next go on that PC. Thanks for your help and the quick responses |
