My Dlink ethernet router just died. I only have one computer but I heard that having a router is the best way to have a firewall. Can anyone give me any advice if I should buy another router or just run a software firewall and which ones are recommended.

A software fire is perfectly acceptable as long as you get a good one.
I have had good reports on Comodo's firewall which is free... Comodo Free Firewall Software Download

Rob, may I also point you to the Firewalls FAQ:
http://www.pchelpforum.com/firewalls...walls-faq.html It provides the answers to your questions and more. Whichever way you decide to go, remember to never go online without your firewall. Either get a new router, or purchase/download a reliable software firewall. For the best results, get both. Let us know if you need any more information. P.S. I've deleted your other duplicate thread over at the Network Help section. |

Thanks for the replies. Ok, I am ready to buy a new router as recommended by Chiaz. Do you have any recommendations for a particular brand? Should I go wireless or wired. I have no intention to buy a laptop., so mobility is not an issue. I would appreciate your comments

You're going to get personal opinion here..but I guess that's why you asked the question
![]() Personally, I would go for a wireless (for future needs maybe) router. The consumer end brands to consider are Netgear and Linksys.

Thanks for quick replie.
I have heard that wireless is less secure and more prone to dropped connections. How about Dlink. Are the really cheap routers from Linksys or dlink reliable. |

The majority of wireless routers also have the ability to connect to pc's with a wired connection. That's if you want to "futureproof" your router
