Exclamation [Pending] URGENT: unable to download anything! half of desktop icons have deafult pic

I've done it yet again, screwed up my computer to a whole new level. half of my icons are a windows default picture and when i click them they become transparent. when i try and run my ani-virus programs the icon goes transparent as well. i go to the control panel to add or remove programs and i can't click it. my itunes doesn't open or work either. i believe it is from my younger brother trying to get hack codes and he entered a cmd code or whatever on the run part of start. help please! i don't want to loose everything.. and remember i can't download anything! it just comes up and says save, then there is a default icon of the program and it yet again becomes transparent when i click it. any help would be so appericated!!!!!!!!

Do a repair install, no loss of data, hopefully will fix windows:

Assuming that you have windows XP but with vista it is basically the same

With all due respects, I wouldn't recommend that. That *might* get your desktop icons back, but you are not getting to the roots of the problem and the problem may reoccur again shortly after.

Do the Prework link in my signature.

good point, but if he cant download anything, then how can he do the pre-work?, i would say that it may be easier to repair, then do the pre-work, when i put my suggestion up i was just taking into account that little detail. im not arguing that your idea is a bad one, its just not the best one considering his current situation

Ouch - you are probably right. Thanks.

But before trying a repair install, I need you, Kelly, to see if you can work properly in Safe Mode:
