Question [Answered] should i use Windows Firewall or something esle?

im looking for a free Firewall. I am currently using Windows firewall. Is this adequate, or should i get a better one. i tried zone alarm, but i was tired of it asking permission for everything. I only need it for about 3 montsh. my parents will be buying a netgear wireless router, that has a built-in firewall. what should i do? i have AVG anti-virus Free Editiopn.

Any firewall you go for will ask permissions, that's pretty much the purpose of a software firewall, to distinguish between applications you wish to allow access to and applications you don't and they're not normally invasive when you have them configured properly.

You're probably still going to want some kind of software firewall even if you have a hardware firewall as a simple embedded hardware firewall isn't going to be sufficient, maybe if it was a big cisco firewall with IDS or something but not a small embedded home firewall.

comodo firewall is very nice, and I haven't had as many bugs with it as I did w/ ZA.

Comodo is awesome though prehaps a little more intrusive than most.

But most firewalls after running for a few days and you have the rule set how you want it just work in the background, I suppose it's the initial set up thats a pain.

For the 1st time in years-- I am running an Internet Security product.
I had bought a multi-lic for Panda Platinum 2007 -- I already had it on the Kid's PC --with very good results-- so I decided I might want to try it.
I had a serious slowdown happening-- I suspected ZA-- so I said let's try that Panda. Setup was a breeze/auto-updates/self diagnostic/ will save money for subscription to updates/ computer's slick as mercury on glass. Great so far-- Kid's PC has had this for 3 years --zero issues.

Sounds great, I may try it out and recommend it to family members.

I tend to stick to the free stuff as I find it does an adequate job, possibly not the best but combined with a little common sense it works fine, that way I can save money for important things... like .... errr....cd's and bike fund? hehe

Umm...a hardware firewall-- is not enough.Especially wireless.
Configuration does help-- but I would still recommend at least a free-version software firewall, too.Improper wireless security is like broadcasting on a radio-- anyone within range can see everything you or your parents do --including steal any passwords you use . Wireless is very convenient...but not totally secure (or even close)
Threats are constantly evolving
new ones are created by the minute.
