Hello faraz.
Thats one of those questions you could ask a dozen people and get a dozen answers. LOL I have tried several of them, and am now using Zone Alarm. Of all the ones i tried , i like it best. It is very effective, fairly simple to use, and a combination of it, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG antivirus, and virtually nothing gets through that i dont want. Ive tried Avast too, and i liked it also. Im sure youll get other opinions, but you can try it and if you dont like it, try another one. A word of caution, if you want to try a different security software of any kind, always download the one you want and have it ready to install before you uninstall your current one. It only takes a few seconds of being online without it to get zapped.

Agreed - ZoneAlarm is among the better.

In regard to free software etc. I personally think that you should purchase a program to do it all for you. This is basically your front door, would you trust having a key for you front door which you had no idea where it came from who had it before you and who has a copy, if you see what i mean.
having read a lot of articles on this over the past few months and having used ZA, avg and nortons over many years I find that Kapersky beats those hands down without a doubt and most reviewers think the same. I dont know how i put up with norton over the years. However there is one better than Kapersky and that is NOD32 but they say its difficult to use. I havent tried it yet.
Kapersky for me does everything and if you have no cash to buy then Like myself you can download the beta version.

NOD32 i would agree as better, although i can see how less-advanced users can find it difficult or confusing to use.
But it is very low on resources

If you have a router with a hardware firewall, isnt the windows firewall good enough?

comodo and kerio are the best ones in my opinion. used both on several ocassions in the past. zone alarm seems to be troublesome for many peoples computers, it was for mine, and i personally don't think it's as good as the ones above, not recommended anymore. i don't use any third-part firewall though, i just use windows default one and my routers. the router alone should cover it.
if your a 'noob', then i'd go with kerio, comodo has a habit of popping up and asking questions a lot. some people may just get tired and constantly press 'allow' everytime, not a good thing to do. i don't even use an anti-virus, if your sensible then you should no what and not what to click and open, what websites not to visit and what precautions you should take. for instance the only security progs i run are anti-spyware, because they are nasty litle buggers, you can get easily infected.
