Norton or Windows firewall?

Never had this before, so thought I might double check with someone here. Is this something based purely on preference or on which one is more reliable?

Hi gummy-ness....i would personally suggest uninstalling Norton completely as i find their software hardly picks up viruses that are new, and slows the computer down to a crawl...
However...their Internet Security is fairly tight - nothing will get in or out without you letting it.

Hello gummy-ness
Did you just install Norton, or have you had it and the warning just popped up? Thats one of those questions, ask a dozen people and get a dozen different answers. Windows firewall is adequate, but i would say Norton is better. Alot of people have had trouble with Norton, and even had to uninstall it to get their system working properly again. But alot of people have excellent results with it, no problems, and wouldnt have anything else. The experts are sort of divided in their opinions. I would say turn off windows firewall and use norton. If you have any problems you can always switch. But you cant run both, that will cause problems and neither will work reliably.
EDIT: Sorry GaRHaR, guess we were typing at the same time, and i type slow.lol

I totallly side with garhar on this one. Very pervasive software, difficult to remove, bogs the system down....I, personally, have gone the ZoneAlarm route for the firewall, and AVG for antivirus, and gotten rid of both Norton and keep windows FW off, but that is me. Bottom line, there are lots of options out there, and just as many people in here to assist you in making the correct decision.

Yup...at work we leave the Windows Firewall off all our clients machines and install Trend Internet Security - it does a fantastic job and uses less resources.
However..at home, I'm running Vista Enterprise - so I'm giving their whole suite a test run...i've got Windows Defender and Firewall running...it's working well

wondering if you work with me. First thing we do is uninstall norton if it comes bundled. Then we uninstall everything that says 'google', or even looks like it might, at sometime in the future, say something close to that.
Then install TrendAV and turn off Windows firewall. Done it so many times got a batch file to turn off the firewall stuff and on the checkpoint remote stuff.....ever so much easier to be lazy.

@Uncleed, no problems mate
@valis - i doubt we work together...because the company iw ork for has 13 people But i think it's become common practice now for anyone working in IT to uninstall Norton and go with Trend...they certainly have a great reputation at the moment...and I'll be they're willing to do whatever it takes to keep that going

There you go, see what i mean. 2 professional opinions, and one thats just an opinion(mine). LOL The biggest reason i suggested trying the Norton though was they may be one of the lucky ones that dont have any problems with it, and they probably paid for it already, its hard to chunk something out that you just bought.LOL But i agree, there are better alternatives , some of which are free. Zone alarm and AVG work well together.

In the short-term Gummy, Norton is more protection than Windows Firewall-- but in the long term I must sgree with Valis and GarHar-- Norton's is a bloated mostly useless piece-of-****/ sucks up huge amounts of system resources for very small benefit.
I run Zone-alarm and AVG (like Valis) and they just take care of business-- ZA popsup a warning about this or that once in a while-- but thats what a firewall does.! Protects you from unseen threats
