Someone has given me a Compaq CQ50 laptop to look at.

There is no display and no POST. Although it appears to power on.

I've tried hooking up an external monitor, both on battery power and on mains power. Nothing happens. (Pressed Fn+F4 as well)

I don't really want to open it up and am wondering what the problem is. Looks like the motherboard has gone bad.

I remember that the HP Pavilion series of laptops had similar faults (also both the HP and Compaq laptops have HDMI built in, which may be part of the problem?).

HP offered an extended warranty for this sort of issue but I'm not sure what Compaq offers, if anything. Should I just tell them the motherboard has gone bad and to buy another laptop or desktop?

Since I reckon a repair would be at least £300

The user's laptop is out of warranty btw so they can't just send it off to be repaired.

Thanks for your insight!

Hi. I have an old laptop “Dell Inspiron 1200”. Yes, still alive. My problem with it is: I have an external LCD screen hooked up to it (Also DELL). This is a 17” LCD screen from my old desktop configuration, I upgraded to 24”, so I decide not to sell this, but to use it with the laptop instead. The issue that I have: every now and then (every 15-20 minutes), my screens resolution jumps. And it jumps from 1024pix X 768pix to 1224pix X 958pix. This is very annoying. It makes a sound like when I plug in or disconnect any USB products. That “Ding” sound that is default in Windows XP operating systems. I reinstalled my “video” driver. No good. Any suggestions folks? Thank You Guys.

My laptop computer is HP Pavilion dv2416us. I bought this computer on 08/2007. On 10/07 I got no video on LCD panel. Still under warranty, I sent back to HP for repair. It ran until last week then I have the same problems again. I made a search on Google and found down that due too many problems with HP laptop, HP limited warranty service enhancement will cover for up to 24 months. I called HP customer services and was told that my laptop only cover until 08/2009. If I want a repair, I will have to pay $249.00
My concern is: too many HP Pavilion with LCD problems- will it's worth the money to repair it? Please give me and idea, should I pay $249.00 or just take a lost and buy myself a new laptop? (One thing I know for sure, I will never buy an HP laptop again!)

It won't charge the battery even with the cord in. and it wont even power up with the cord in and the battery out.

after about 15 minutes of anger and fiddling it would finally work. I read online that it might be a motherboard issue.

I'm afraid to unplug the thing cause it might turn off and never turn on again.

the batter work perfect and lasts up to 3 hours on a full charge, a blinking red led battery light came on once but out of the 20 times it only happened once.

I'm replacing my old system (160 Gb XP Tower 19" CRT). I have decided (tentatively) on a Dell 2709w 27" TFT Monitor and a Seagate 1.5 TB External 2.0 USB HDD. I would like to go away from a tower and use a Laptop as I have little available workspace. I will also be using an external DVD RW.The laptop will be almost exclusively used in situ and will not do any 'walking around'. With the external DVD Rw and a wireless keyboard and mouse, the laptop will be on a shelf with plenty of fresh air around it so my workspace will be as empty as possible.

My tower is powered up 24/7 for receiving downloads, overnight updates, defragging etc. so I would like some advice on :-

Overheating issues
ROM speed
slaving the large TFT screen as my primary screen
Using a wireless keyboard and Mouse as Primary user input

I would welcome suggestions as to minimum requirements for RAM, Internal HDD size, chip speed and operating system, plus any other issues I haven't mentioned.

Thanx in anticipation

Hi there,

Can anyone help with my vista startup problem. I have a Toshiba laptop model PSLD8E and I noticed a problem with my cd/DVd drive and had a yellow exclamation by this in device manager. I googled to resolve the problem and found a solution which was to delete a couple of enteries in the registry 'upper and lower filters' this solved the problem. I also noticed an exclamation mark next to Ms 6to4 adapter#26 in network adapters the driver is not working has code 31 but driver is up-to-date so downloaded a couple of programs that fix PC problems and download missing or corrupt drivers but there was a cost so i uninstalled them. Sometime later I noticed my computer not starting properely. The screen just goes blank or you might see the cursor and it will stay like that. I have to disconnect the battery pack to restart! It has initiated the repair sequence but doses not repair and restore didn't help. A friend suggested it might be Norton 360 I have installed, so i uninstalled that and downloaded Nod32 still no joy but I couldn't completely uninstall Norton. Norton did backup a few times but I haven't tried restoring from backup, not sure this would work. I started in safe mode but still the same problem and sometimes safe mode didn't load. I also tried last known good configuration this loaded but I still have the problem. I can get the laptop to work eventually but sometimes it just freezes, I also have latest windows updates installed. I think I have corrupt startup files but I don't necessary want to do a complete re-install Vista at the stage. Please can anyone help.

Earlier i performed a whole system reset, to put the laptop back into the factory state. What i didn't know was that the laptop was running out of battery, and consequentaly died.
Now when i try and go back on to continue the reset, it comes up with an error screen saying 'The computer restarted unexpectedly, or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click 'OK' to restart the computer, and then restart the installation'.

Being not amazing with computers, i am unsure what to do from here on.
Im not sure if i have the correct Windows disk either, i was just doing a system reset. Any help would be great.

Hi,
I am new to this forum so please go easy with me.
I am having awful problems with my HP Pavillion laptop. For a while now I have had 8 screens on the one screen. What I can see is very unclear, lines etc.
I have tried a few things to fix it with my very limited knolege and have failed. I have tried reinstalling the display drivers and the latest updates etc, with no luck. After installing some updates it was fixed, then after shutting down and restarting it went back to its old ways. When I was in safe mode the other day it was fine but now its even bad in safe mode.

Can any one help?
thanks

My mate asked me to install windows 7 (not bought from acer site)onto his acer aspire 6530 laptop for him and he assured me he had made a backup disc, (which i NOW know he hasn't!),
so i did a clean install of windows 7 onto it (formatted hdd when given the option)which seems to have gone on fine(although the "starting windows" screen still has the vista style progress bar thing?), but when i restart the laptop, up comes the acer recovery screen but wont let me choose any option other than exit, and when i click exit it restarts and we eventually end up back at the recovery screen and that's it that, all it does!
I had formatted most of the hdd (it was in 3 partitions) but had left 1 partition alone that said it had some acer program on it because i wasn't sure what it was that was on there. (might be important, might be the restore program?). i have downloaded all the drivers for his laptop from the acer site but cant figure out how to get them onto it if all i get is the restore screen!
any ideas as to how to fix it? should i reinstall windows 7 again and this time delete the remaining partion too? or is it F.U.B.A.R? (f*cked up beyond all recognition) .
i wish i had said no to him now, i foolishly assumed it would be SO easy to do!
