GTX 285 distressingly slow

Hey guys,

You may remember me from earlier random problems, such as the most recent:
Weird monitor blackness...

Hey guys,

You may remember me from earlier random problems, such as the most recent:
Weird monitor blackness

To save you having to read six pages of thread, we determined that my graphics card was to blame. I therefore went out and purchased the Zotac GTX 285 AMP! edition and installed in this morning.

At first, it worked fine, and i installed the 197.50 drivers without a hitch. The alarm bells first started ringing when i attempted to run Crysis Warhead...

After about 10 seconds on the menu screen, weird artefacts appeared on the screen and the system locked up. On top of that, when i restarted the system, one of my monitors didn't turn on (meaning that buying the new card didn't fix anything).

This freezing wasn't just a one off, every time i restarted and tried to run crysis, the same thing happened. The only way i could get it to run was to unplug one of my monitors.

Once i actually had it running, i noticed that there wasn't really a noticeable performance gain over my 8800GTX, i had kinda hoped that a card three generations newer might actually provide some kind of advantage...

I decided to run 3d mark 06 to see what the numerical gain was. My old card achieved a perfectly acceptable 10300 score, i was hoping for at least 17-18,000 (Tomshardware.com recorded the score as 21,000 with the exact card, though their review rig was a little faster than mine).

My new score? 11,600.

Me? Not pleased.

So, in summary:
- Purchased new card to fix problem with blank monitors
- New card didn't fix problem
- Card is performing at approximately 60% capacity, for some reason
- 3Dmark06 score approx 7-8000 lower than it should be

Any ideas guys? I'd be enormously grateful if you can help me sort this out. It's a lot of money to waste...

UPDATE:
I checked the details in Sisoft sandra to see if anything was obviously wrong
Some of the performance tips at the bottom confused me a little... video BIOS?

I want to upgrade my gfx card to 9800gt. I currently have 1 PCI slot free and I dont even have a 6-pin connector let alone two of them, which are required. My Power supply 250w, so that will need to be upgrade. What I need to know is by upgrading my power supply, do I also upgrade my pin connectors? (i.e do the connectors come with the power supply?) Also do I need to upgrade sopmething else? Is it even worth upgrading or do I just buy a new PC? (bought this one in april).

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi,
I've just upgraded my son's PC - Pentium 4 1,7Ghz - to Windows 7. I knew that the drivers for mi video card - ATI Radeon 9200, weren't available. Once upgraded, the only resolution that I get with the standard VGA driver is 800x600 or 1024x768.

My monitor is a LG L192WS, which can go up to 1440x900.

Is there a generic driver for VGA cards that gives more resolution choices then only those 2?

Thanks

I bought Modern Warfare 2 this week and installed it. After around 10 mins of play my computer restarted by itself. Got it back up, waited a while and started playing again. After around an hour it turned off again and now I wont turn on at all.

My specs:
MB - GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G RT
CPU - AMD|A64 X2 6000 3.0G AM2 2x1M R
VGA - EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR 9800GT 512M
RAM - 2Gx2 CORSAIR TWIN

I had this system for over a year without much problems in this department. This is the first time it happened, from Modern Warfare 2.

So now when I boot it up using the regular power button, all the fans turn on (vga and cpu fan too) but thats all it does. No post, no beeps whatsoever. The monitor says to check the signal connection. The power button doesnt work when I try to turn the computer off by holding it for a couple of seconds. Also, I cant open the cd-rom.

I checked pretty much all the cable connections inside. I took out the RAM and tried booting it up and had no beeps coming from the MB.

I also bought a new PSU, but that didnt help either.

Does that mean the VGA is dead?

Would appreciate any help in this situation.

I have 2 cards for my computer, but I can't decide what card is best.
The first is a ATi Radeon HD 2400 Pro, the second a nVidia GeForce 7600 GS. Comparison:
Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com

The Radeon has a higher core clock, and supports DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.1, but the GeForce has a bigger user rating. What card should I use?

Hi guys, i'm back again with another bafflingly random issue.

I recently bought a second screen for my rig. I now have one widescreen 24", and one normal 19". In the last few days, the 19" has been randomly going black.

This either happened when i turned the system on, so i would only have the widescreen, or it would fail to come back on after being turned off for inactivity.

In general, a restart would fix the issue. Now, i was assuming that it was a problem with the monitor, but this morning BOTH monitors failed to turn on with the system, the 24" being almost brand new. I should stress that the rest of the system is definitely running fine, music still plays, etc.

I restarted it a couple of times and i managed to get a signal to the 19", which is what i am writing this on now. 24" is upsettingly blank.

Any ideas? I'm fairly sure my specs are on my profile, i'll double check once i've posted and add them if they're missing.

Thanks guys.
