Hi there

Hi there

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. I have read the sticky thread on the forum about 64 bit systems and how help may be limited for them, also about the sticky thread about antivirus software for these systems (though I only read this last thread after experiencing my problems below XD).

My story:

My banking site offers a free version of McAfee to download. For almost half a year I have used this antivirus from my banking site. It is McAfee Total Protection for Small Businesses version 4.7.0.566. Normally McAfee updates itself automatically on a daily basis. Yesterday I realized it had not updated since August 25th 2010. After several attempts to update it and troubleshoot it (errors said something about that it could not connect to the server) I decided to uninstall McAfee and get another antivirus. I removed it via the Add/Remove Programs function that windows has. This removed it completely.

I tried to install the free version of Avast both the 4.8 Home version and the 5.0 newest version. Both have failed to install. The 5.0 version gives me the this is "not a valid Win32 application" error. The 4.8 version gets into the installation setup, starts to download the setupeng.exe file but then fails and presents me with a log. Here is the log:

I have no idea why it says Windows Vista in there because my system is Windows 7. :\ I don't understand logs.

I have surfed numerous forums for help for hours and looked for avast versions that 'say' they are compatible with windows 7. All to no avail.

Since my pc was vulnerable with no antivirus - me having uninstalled McAfee and Avast failing to install - I decided to find my original McAfee install file that I originally downloaded from the bank. I thought that if I reinstalled it it would work again.

McAfee half installed itself. It's icon appears in my system tray, a shortcut on my start menu and a file in my C drive Program Files, but it is not working as it is not activated I'm guessing because it says my "company key is invalid". I have no idea what it is talking about. If I click on the icon it takes me to their site but there is no where where I can enter a company key, nor do I have a key. Right clicking the system tray icon only allows me to see About and Help options and no scanning options.

McAfee does not appear in the Add/Remove Programs list for me to remove it like I originally did. I downloaded the McAfee removal tool (similar to the one Norton has) and the tool does not run either, giving me the "not a valid Win32 application" error. I suspect because its not meant for a 64bit OS?

Anyway I tried deleting the McAfee file in C drive Program Files and could not delete all of the file contents. I then tried HiJackThis because I thought I could pick out any Symantec or McAfee out of the registry. After running a scan I realised I do not have enough IT knowledge to fiddle with HiJackThis so I left the program alone. I tried AppRemover by OPSWAT and ran both scans, but it did not help either as it didn't detect the half installed McAfee.

I am stuck and out of time to carry on fiddling and forum searching for solutions. Please help. I am unsure what I have told you is invalid or valid. I just tried to tell everything that happened.

Thanks

Edit:
Long story short I need to uninstall McAfee so I can install a new antivirus. I would like to use Avast as I know its pretty good, but alas Avast isn't installing. I will try one of the antiviruses suggested in the sticky thread on the forum.

A long while back I had a b'day party at my house. Obviously lads being lads I let them on my pc (to play music mainly). The next time I check up on them they're mucking around on the internet watching porn and disgusting videos (nothing illegal luckily just weird fetish stuff n sick videos). Anyway a few months have passed and weird stuff is happening with few of my accounts e.g youtube etc. Turns out that one of them (who knows a lot about pc's) thought it be funny to hack into my pc now and again using remote acess and my router password etc, or whatever. I don't know exactly which ways he was getting in but he was saving favourites of stupid porn videos, pics, links you name it.
They were only "having a laugh" and they muck around with everyones pc's when they go over each others houses. I've luckily managed to change all my passwords and stuff and he said he doesn't and can't do it anymore anyway. But he had done it a fair few times over many months when they were over his house.

Long story short, I'm worried that my ISP my think I'm some sort of weirdo now because of the stupid stuff they have seached for (it's a family pc see). I know I'm being paranoid because it wasn't even illegal stuff but I was wondering if they keep records of sites visited and videos watched?
If so, what length of time do they keep record for, e.g. the past week, month or year?

I have caught a virus on my PC. I have a Gateway laptop that is running Windows 7. I am going out of town and I need my laptop to do things for school while I am gone.

A error message continues to pop up. This error message pops up every 3 seconds.

The error message states "Application cannot be executed. The file skypenames2.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?". If you click on either "yes" or "no" it continues to show up. It does not let me access the internet from my web browser, Internet Explorer, at all.
All of this is only happening on my Administrater account. My Guest and other Standard accounts allow me to access Internet Explorer.

The file name on this example "skypenames2.exe" is always changing. It is never the same file name.

I am running the free version of AVG. It does not open on my Administrater account. I open it on other accounts and it does not detect any viruses.

Thank you,

Ok, so I am sure a lot of people here are familiar with this virus. Well I heard that the simple solution is to start windows in safe mode and do a system restore. However, I cannot run my desktop (the infected computer) in safe mode because my keyboard and mouse don't actually turn on until after my computer boots up and I miss my chance to hit the f8 key.

I read of a way to start up in safe mode through msconfig, however the stupid virus is blocking anything that I try to do.

I don't know how to get my computer into safe mode! And I need help. It's frustrating to know the solution to my problem but not have any way of actually solving it.

I'm running windows vista 64bit if that matters. Please help as soon as possible!

Hi, I am getting very frustrated. I am trying to install the latest version of AVG (AVG9) from AVG's website or www.filehippo.com but although I can download the program OK, the installation stops with a message stating that I must unistall AVG7.5 first. There is no option to ignore it and continue with the setup.
Here's the rub; I cannot unistall AVG7.5. There is no sign of it in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs though I have managed to manually delete the Grisoft program from the Programs folder on my C: drive. I have also stopped all AVG applications from running in msconfig. I have also dowonloaded and run the AVG Removal Tool but that does not work as it cannot locate AVG7.5.
Windows XP Security Centre reports that AVG7.5 is switched off although the Security Centre Task Bar icon reports that AVG7.5 is out-of-date on boot.
Please can somebody tell me how to remove AVG7.5 so that I can install AVG9. Thanks.

Hi everyone.

I am new here, this is my 2nd post. I would like to know if anyone with some experience would like to share a good internet security program like (Norton Internet Security for example) that takes care of everything (malware, spyes, trojans, and all sort of viruses).

This is because my free trial for a month is ending very soon and i would hate my new hp computer to get contaminated again. I think it is a waste for people to buy a security program every year as its a waste of money, especially for those who have been using computers for more than a decade and have to constantly reboot; i have heard it makes your computer slow..

I am now using Norton Internet Security for free and the trial is ending soon. So please help mew with the best free complete malware program available in the internet that i can download

I have a Windows 2000 machine on which I cannot install any antivirus software. Zone Alarm is already on there. I downloaded PCTools and when I try to run the exe file, the interface shows up with these strange characters. I can't do anything with it. Same thing with Avast and others. Even when I mouse over the systray clock, the date is written in this foreign language or whatever it is. It looks to me like Greek or Russian.
I REALLy need to clear this up. Any clues?
Is there an online virus scanner I can use?

Well, around 1 AM, someone was helping me with some problems via TeamViewer, and he decided to send me a scanner to look for a virus called ak$327, which I was being told deletes Windows files in periods of time. Sadly, I had the nasty thing and was told I was missing at least 2,012 .dll files out of the Windows directory. Now, as my computer still is functional, i'd like to actually know what i've lost and how to recover such files. :oZ
