Hi there,

I hope someone can help me with this.

I've got a little big problem with my site... This is the link: http://bloomin-fantasy.hollywood.com/
If you open it with IE, you won't find any problem. Problems come when you open it with Firefox... everything is wrong and you can't read anything.

Today I realized that the Doctype was missing, so I added it, but in a different URL before publishing it because it could have some errors. And yes, now it's eveything wrong, in both IE and Firefox, as you can see: http://bloomin-fantasy.hollywood.com/index2.html

I'm not good at HTML, at all... so I don't really know what to do. What do I have to change, or add, so it can be perfect?

I'm sorry for my English.
Thanks in advance,
Teresa

It's in the div class that I simpy named "a" that is still getting the effects from the first "a:hover" in the CSS list like the 1px dotted border with the #800517 colour.

I'm not sure how to correct this.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi everybody, I'm new here but I've been a freelance web designer for many years: www.robbydesigns.com. Looking around in the 'Web Design' section I see many people asking the same questions so, coffee in hand, I'm going to write a little guide right here which I hope will help you all in some way.

1. Do you need to know HTML /CSS to make a website?
The simple answer is not really but you will need a basic understanding or you will be forever trying to work out why your text is green instead of black and why only half of your image is visible.

In the old days websites were laid out in tables with DIV's TR's TD's etc but this has been mainly pushed aside for the more manageable and less code heavy CSS.
CSS is used to style a website, for example, we choose what colour links will be, how far that image is away from another image etc.
The beauty of this is that we can easily change things if we decide it doesn't look right.
CSS is as complicated as you need it to be - you can learn simple CSS by reading a few tutorials on the internet or buy the 'Simple CSS' ebook I have (PM me if you're interested).

2. What software do I need to make a website?
I'm going to upset a few people now by saying most web dev's do not use Dreamweaver and instead opt to hand-code. Why? Because, just like Photoshop's save as a web page option, the code is old fashioned (Tables, TD's,TR's etc) and usually has many errors
Here's the software I use:

Code: CSE HTML Validator
This lets you hand code / edit code with an inbuilt validator to let you know of any errors. This is good for intermediates whilst beginners might prefer the CoffeeCup HTML Editor which has a split-screen so you can see the code plus a live version of how the site looks as you edit. There's a free trial so go ahead.

Design: Adobe Photoshop
There is no better.
For a free solution try 'The Gimp' - I've never used it but I have heard it's pretty good.

If you are looking to make a beautiful website you will first need to learn about design. Web dev's get paid well simply because there is more to design than using Dreamweaver - learn about design as the whole from fonts and colour in design to how to grab the attention.
Once you have a grasp of that, go buy yourself a copy of the latest edition of 'Web Design For Dummies'.

3. What is the down-right easiest way to make a nice website?
Use a template.
Google 'website templates' or visit ThemeForest.net. You'll find loads of beautiful designs you can easily edit to your requirements (make a back up copy of the template before you start work). If you need pretty pictures Google 'stock photos' or visit 123-RF.com; note that most designers agree that stock photos should be used sparingly as they do not add a personal or 'real' feel to a website..you need to inspire trust.

So there you have it, a basic guide.
I hope this helps.

Hi all!! I just found this site- while doing searches ALL day... I finally made the switch from frontpage to dreamweaver this past year- and am now learning and using more and more css in my web designs.... I have been working on my new marketplace site- and..... It works great on all 5 of the computers I tested and in explorer and in firefox.. Both the most recent versions- and in older versions... For some reason- it will not work properly in my mothers computer. I'm exhausted- and cannot figure out why!!

She says that the page is "jumpy", and is like flipping on her- it's not scrolling down smoothly. Now- on all of the other computers I tested- everything is beautiful. The css background stays fixed- the html site content floats and scrolls smoothly over it- and all is well in our world...

Would anybody care to test the site for me? Or perhaps give me an idea on why it is just not working on her computer??? We looked at everything I could think of!! HELP!!!

The site is under construction- as I am just building it- but here it is:
www.justforkeeps.net

Thanks Bunches!!!!

Hi all, I was just experimenting and wanted to use three background images on a table, but the images are not appearing when viewed in IE. I've used background images before with no problem, but for some reason it's not working now.

I've attached one of the background images.

Here is the code...

Table Colour Backgrounds

Table Colour Backgrounds

Bengal Tiger

Siberian Tiger

Indochinese Tiger

And this is what I'm getting when viewed.

Can someone help please??
