I have an Ergo 3-Button Serial-PS/2 Trackball, which may be older than the Internet (well, no, not really). I don't have any specific information on it anymore, but it's listed on Amazon.com.

I'm using it in the serial port, because I prefer it for playing games, but find my mouse is better for actual work (and switching them is inconvenient due to my laziness).

However, the middle trackball button does not work. Normally the way to fix this is to tell the computer it's a Logitech mouse (instead of a Microsoft one), however Logitech, for whatever reason, does not support serial devices in windows XP.

Also note that the drivers which came with it were on a floppy disc, and would have worked, but they are not meant for anything past windows 98 (they are compatible back to windows 3.1) and XP would not even let me try to use them.

Are there any drivers I could try which would allow the middle button to work on XP? Part of my problem with tracking down driver is not only the age of the device, but also that the brand "Ergo" seems to come up with anything which is described as "Ergonomic". If anyone as a source for Ergo drivers I am willing to try them all until one works. ;D

Thank you in advance.

I have this problem a couple of days, I have read tons of topis, tried stuff, but can't come to a solution.

PROBLEM:
Screen freezes but pc keeps working. In other words: if my screen freezes, I can still push the windows logo on my keyboard, left arow, press enter twice, and my pc will shut down.

I have formated my pc. Installed windows vista again.

I cleaned my pc and checked if the cabels where put in right.

I tried to install new drivers, but the screen freezes. (I think that new drivers could'nt help, because the standard drivers of windows should work, because I bought the pc that way?)

Savety mode, it freezes..

there are moments that my pc works longer then 5 min..

Long list..conclusion, HELP!

Hello everybody,

I have a problem which with my PC has been persisting for several months:
Every 2-3 days it freezes - the cursor turns into a circle, and although the mouse is movable, I cannot close any program. Occasionally (not every time this happens) screen goes black as well. So the only choice I have is to reboot the system by pressing the power switch.

If I reboot PC, it does not load. I have to run drivers and utilities CD (which came with the PC) and after running the system test it shows "all is OK!". I reboot PC and everything works until the next time (in 2-3 days).
I should mention that this situation started to show up when my graphic card had failed a few months ago and I started to use VGA input on the motherboard.

I was told that it's like to be the video card problem, but before I buy a replacement video card I would like to ask you -

1. How can I check there are no other hardware problems with my PC?

2. Is there any diagnostic software (preferably free) that I can run to make sure it's the video card problem?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
Thank you in advance

Hello,

Firstly let me apologise if this is in the wrong section. I genuinely don't know whether this is hardware of software related although I suspect hardware.

The problem is as of 2 weeks ago my PC keeps freezing (keyboard and mouse are totally inactive and I am forced to switch off at the power). For about 6 months prior to this happening I had problems with my system clock being behind when I booted up in the morning, I have since replaced the CMOS battery which has fixed this but I'm not sure its related to the freezing.

It sometimes crashes when loading Windows, sometimes when I'm playing games, sometimes when I leave the machine doing nothing and come back it has happened and sometimes it doesn't even make it into Windows and gets as far as displaying the disk drives etc.

One time it did actually crash whilst I was playing a game and on Skype with a friend. The game crashed, the keyboard and mouse froze but Skype was still running and I was still able to speak.

Normally after freezing once, it is more likely to freeze again straight afterwards (after I boot again). If I leave the machine off for a while I seem to get more time on it before crashing, or at least I think I do.

Things I have tried:-

- Taking RAM out one by one. This seemed to make a difference, crashing seemed more infrequent but still crashes.
- Taken case off and cleaned fully. A lot of dust on and around the CPU. After cleaning it didn't crash for a few days but then went back to crashing sporadically.
- Adjusted power fan switch on PSU. It was set to 'auto' so I have tested on 'high' and 'low', has crashed on all 3 settings.
- Because I keep having to restart machine whilst it is still on I often get prompted to start in safe mode. I haven't been able to replicate the crash whilst in Safe mode although I have only really left it in safe mode for a few hours.
- Installed riva tuner to measure the core temperature. All seems OK, sits at about 55 degrees and moves up to about 65ish when playing a game.
- I ran Chkdsk, there were errors which have since been fixed. I presume these errors were because I am sometimes restarting as the pc froze whilst loading applications. PC still freezes after Chkdsk completed anyway.
- I ran the driver update program and all my drivers are up to date.

In fact after working fine all morning it has decided to freeze on me whilst writing this post and again whilst trying to boot up!

Any help is greatly appreciated. If anyone needs any further info then please ask away :)

Hello all,

The crashing problem...

Hello all,

I have a major problem with my current computer. You have probably already guessed it looking at the title :)

The crashing problem is TOTALLY random. It crashes when I'm making homework (one document), when I play HD movies, when I play games that take a lot to run. Sometimes it crashes after 5 minutes of Fallout 3 on the highest graphics, sometimes I can play for several hours.

I have been talking to a guy who knows more about this then me, and he's suggesting that the processor is overheating, but we tested this, and it stayed at a steady degree, which wasn't high according to him.

We have send it to the manufacturer for them to repair it, but it kept crashing (less the first, but still).

Another suggestion was that I had the computer turned on for too long, but I tend to forget to turn it off when going to school, and sometimes it still is working well. Note that this is after 8 hours, yet sometimes it crashes after 5 minutes.

I have seriously no idea what the hell is wrong with it, so I'm looking for ANYTHING that might fix this; is it the RAM, is it the processor, is it missing drivers, ANYTHING.

Thank you very much.

Hi, I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 546s desktop. I bought it new on Sept. 24,2009. It worked like a dream, but here lately it has been acting funny. First the monitor was shutting off, randomly by itself(while I'm on it). The tower would stay on when this would happen. The only way to fix it was to press the off button til it went off. After if came back on it would work fine. Now when the screen shuts off the tower goes into standby and the fan spins really really fast. The off button does not work went this happens. The only way to fix it is to unplug computer, wait a minute or two, and plug it back up. When it comes back on it is ok then. Someone told me that it could be my hard drive or motherboard. Can someone help me?#!##!#

The past few days, my computer slowly went downhill.

It would spontaneously restart.

When booting up it would tell me chkdsk was deleting corrupt files.

It would blue screen and crash.

One time, the very first screen that popped up when I booted up said: "Chassis Intruted! Fatal Error . . . System Halted." And it sat there until I turned it off again.

I had just received Windows 7 at this point and I tried relentlessly to install it, but kept getting errors such as, "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570." Other times, I'd get the same error message and a different error code.

I tried it on my C: drive (which had Vista on it) and my D: drive which was blank and except for backup and storage.

I finally yanked my D: drive out, put it in a friends computer, and Windows 7 installed on it beautifully. I then put the hard drive back into my computer and Windows 7 booted up, ran great for 5 minutes, blue screen, and crashed.

I figured the easiest hardware that could go wrong was the memory (I had four 1 GB sticks that were about 1.5 years old). I randomly removed two sticks and the computer has be running perfectly for 24 hours.

It looks like the memory simply went bad which would be a quick and easy fix, but some of the earlier errors point to a motherboard problem.

What's a good way to find out if it really was just the memory, or if there is another hardware issue lurking in the background?

Specs (built at home by me):

-Asus P5K motherboard
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz
-Western Digital 500GB SATA Hard Drive, 7200rpm, 16MB
cache x2 (although now only 1 is hooked up)
-4x1GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2 Memory (800Mhz) (now only 2GB in)
-Samsung 18x Dual DVD-RW/+RW blk
-Nvidia 8800 GTS 640MB PCI-E Video Card (EVGA)
-Creative Labs SoundBlaster X-FI Fatal1ty Pro

Hi,
I have recently cleaned my PC by removing the chasis cover. Since then everything is fine but my USB ports are not working. It can see that it has power and in Device Manager it shows that USB root hub is working properly. When I connect a USB optical mouse to the port I can hear the sound that it is detected but it does not work. However out of 5 port there are 2 port in the front of chasis. only 1 port of this is working properly. Can anyone help me regarding this. Please find my PC specs in the attachment.
Thanks
