Hello to all and thank you for your time!

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with Windows XP. I had a voltage problem in my house, which has been there for years, but thought maybe it could be part of the problem. I've pretty much ruled that out.
My computer continuously just turns off, then reboots directly to Windows. In the past 2 months, I have been receiving error codes, such as
Checkpoint: POKE
Checkpoint: SIZE
Once when rebooting, this came up two times before it completed booting:
"Installing update 1 of 1. Do not turn off computer. It will automatically turn off".
I have to recover my desktop each time.
I lost half of my custom "sounds" for the computer.
I have had my icons come up double on the desktop.
When windows starts, a balloon pops up every single time and says "Computer must be restarted before installation can continue. Would you like to restart the computer now".

The things I have done, among a lot of research is:
Run Registry Mechanic a zillion times. It always, always finds at least 1 error. One error it keeps finding and can't seem to repair is \Temp~DFF95A.tmp. But the rest seem to be random each time.
I ran SpyBot, found errors and repaired. Many times.
I have ESET Nod and have scanned many times with it.
I ran error check in C: drive. When I came back in the room, it was finished, and windows was up.
I ran SFC /scannow several times, but it gets to 37%, and my computer reboots.
I ran Windows File Protection several times. Each time it would get halfway thru, then reboot.
I downloaded new definitions for windows defender, installed and ran, then nothing.
Other than having to get into the reg.check and removing programs, I'm at a loss at what to do! It is just not usable the way it is now. I never know when it is going to reboot, which is every 10-40 minutes it seems.
Keep in mind, I am only a beginner, but I'm a fast learner if anyone would be inclined to help.
Oh - one last thing...I turned off all power, unplugged all USB's, pushed the power button on the computer for 30 seconds, then plugged power back in, powered the system on, and that one took me half a day to finally get the computer to even boot up!
Things like this are probably a no-brainer - if you know what you're doing!
So thanks in advance for your patience. And if I don't answer quickly, you will know why. I will persevere!

I just built my first PC these past couple weeks and I got it up and running about 3 days ago. Since then, I've had at least 1 BSOD error a day. Nothing today though. I did a memtest, and it didn't find any errors. Other than that, I don't know what else the problem could be. I usually get them after running any computer games.

I'm attaching the last 3 .dmp files.

Thanks in advance... And I apologize, this is all a learning experience for me, as this is the first time I've ever built my own system.

wading through mud

Hi, everyone, especially experts! I'm a translator, based outside Madrid, and I spend up to 12 hours a day working at my PC, which is nearly 6 years old and is used almost exclusively for work. It is a Pentium 4 - 3MHz with 1024MB RAM. As I suppose is normal, it has been getting slower and slower over the last year or so (I don't think it is due to any specific hard/software I might have installed, as that would surely have caused a sudden deterioration) and I have downloaded many programmes and utilities over the last few months, some of them in an attempt to speed up the PC, clean the registry, smarten up the RAM, etc., others, such as alternative e-mail clients, in an attempt to rid myself of increasingly quirky behaviour from Eudora, etc. I run XP SP2 (SP3 caused serious problems) and I changed from Norton to Kaspersky IS last December which reduced start-up time and generally made the computer faster. However, I have recently noticed in Task Manager that a large quantity of RAM is taken up with avp.exe, svchost.exe and a load of other stuff, far surpassing what appears to be used by my staple programmes (Eudora, FileMaker Pro, Word, even Firefox).
I submitted a similar, if less detailed, message to another forum a couple of weeks ago but after the initial response I've heard nothing, despite a renewed plea a couple of days back. I'm aware that I should not submit to more than one help forum and I beg forgiveness if I have contravened any rules, but I really need fairly urgent help to free up my computer, RAM, registry, or whatever is dragging it down. As the evening draws on, it is more and more like wading through mud.

I have downloaded HiJackThis, DDS, Security Check, etc. But I await your instructions. Many thanks in advance for your help.

Regards, MadWill

hi,
i need some help.
i have a dell dimension 8300. when i boot up my PC i get a black screen with the mouse cursor on. I can move the cursor but nothing else comes up. this happens after the windows xp loading screen.
before this started happening i was getting a message every time i booted up saying system battery voltage low. then this problem started.
i have replaced the cmos battery and resetted my bios settings, but to no avail.
i have tried changing the order the drives boot up in, and putting the cd drive to boot first, so i can use my xp cd to do a repair install, but this didnt work either, the cd sounds like its booting but i still just get the black screen.
it won't even boot windows in safe mode, i get a black screen still with safe mode written in all four corners.
Ctrl Alt Del doesn't work and neither does pressing shift 5 times.
someone please help!!

Hi, i wasn't sure where to put this, so if it is in the wrong area I do apologize. This should be an "easy one" for you. When i step away from my computer for a long time, my screen turns black. Once i come back and move the mouse the screen "shows" again. Can you please tell me how to keep the screen "on" while I'm away for long periods of time. Does it have something to do with "screen saver" ? I've set it for 250 minutes.

ok so i downloaded a really old tv show season. and its been downloaded and works ok and i can burn it but my question is how cna i burn it in a way that lets me play it on my TV like i would a store bought DVD. i dont mean i want advertisments and previews and intros lol. but more im refering to a menu option. where i can select which episode i wish to watch and it will play. instead of endless back to back playing of episode 1-45.
id like to say play episode 22 then it plays it and im happy. i dont wann ahve to sit thru episodes 1-21 to get to 22. . so id like a play all feature with space between episodes and a menu to select a specific episode .

im fairly sure this can be done im just un aware of how to do it .
i know when you burn a cd you can tell it how long to wait between songs id like that for the shows so someone not payig attention can tell when the episode ended and when the next is starting.

anyone have any ideas???
im not looking to take up advanced programming or anything like that. i just wanna put it on a dvd the right way and get to watching it as soon as possible.

I'm having an issue that I was hoping some wise folk here could help me with.

I'll point form the synopsis and everything should make sense:
2 drives (several partitions each)
I had XP installed/working on the first partition of drive 0 and everything else was games/storage/etc.

I bought and installed windows 7 (home premium x64) on the first partition of drive 1 and everything worked great.

I'd boot up and get a menu for loading "windows 7" or "older version of windows"

When i'd boot windows 7 the drive 1 partition would be C: and the partition from xp would become D:

When i'd boot to XP the drive 0 partition would be C: and the windows 7 partition would become D:

exactly as I wanted it. I could boot back to xp and have everything the way it was and I can play around in windows 7 without affecting it.

It has been going well for about a week. (windows 7 has very few problems even with older games and it makes all my games run much smoother).

Today I rebooted after a minor video issue (set resolution wrong and my screen wouldn't work) and now there's no menu for starting XP.

If i set it to boot from drive 0 it just goes into an endless cycle of reboot (which seems to happen JUST before the boot menu appears)
I can set it to treat Drive 1 as the boot drive and then it will just boot to windows 7 without going to a boot menu.

Nothing was installed or changed. since yesterday when it booted fine.

any ideas?

I am trying to understand the memory in my PC as I don't think I'm using it all.
I did a system check using a freeware called System Information for Windows (SIW) and this is what I found:

System Summary
Physical Memory 3183 MB Total, 1052 MB Free

Memory Summary
Maximum Capacity 1024 MBytes
Maximum Memory Module Size 2048 MBytes

Slot 1 Capacity 2048 MBytes
Slot 2 Capacity 2048 MBytes

Belarc also suggests
3184 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

This is where I keep going round in circles.

Usable Installed Memory or Physical Memory 3183 MB Total suggests to me that this is the total amount that the system will use even though it recognizes 4096 MBytes are installed? Is this a true statement.

Someone once suggested that the rest is taken in overhead but I tend not to agree as we are talking about Physical Memory not Allocated/Unallocated Memory.

3184mb is about the total that a 32bit system can use but I have a 64bit system and that leads me to think I'm not getting the full potential.

I would appreciate some input on this

Hello there. First post here. :)

Well, I've been getting random blue screens for some time now. I'm baffled, as I cannot find out what could be causing them. I've ran memtest, stressed out cpu and graphics card, and nothing. I assume it would be a hardware related problem, as I had Win XP installed and was already getting the blue screens (I have now Windows 7). I'm including the latest 3 minidumps.

Thanks in advance.
