Ridiculous, I know, but having used XP for 5 years, I've long ago abandoned any hope of being able to SEARCH. For anything. Anywhere. I can enter the exact case-sensitive text of a file and watch XP fail to find it, right in front of itself! It can't even have the wit to search the folder I'm in unless laboriously instructed, but so what? It simply can't find ANYTHING! What is the problem here? am I insane? Is Microsoft blitheringly cretinous, or is it me?#!#

And further, if in fact XP is so totally useless, is there software that can be found to do the job properly? Apple's old Sherlock comes to mind...

Hello to all and thank you for your time!

Hello to all and thank you for your time!

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with Windows XP. I had a voltage problem in my house, which has been there for years, but thought maybe it could be part of the problem. I've pretty much ruled that out.
My computer continuously just turns off, then reboots directly to Windows. In the past 2 months, I have been receiving error codes, such as
Checkpoint: POKE
Checkpoint: SIZE
Once when rebooting, this came up two times before it completed booting:
"Installing update 1 of 1. Do not turn off computer. It will automatically turn off".
I have to recover my desktop each time.
I lost half of my custom "sounds" for the computer.
I have had my icons come up double on the desktop.
When windows starts, a balloon pops up every single time and says "Computer must be restarted before installation can continue. Would you like to restart the computer now".

The things I have done, among a lot of research is:
Run Registry Mechanic a zillion times. It always, always finds at least 1 error. One error it keeps finding and can't seem to repair is \Temp~DFF95A.tmp. But the rest seem to be random each time.
I ran SpyBot, found errors and repaired. Many times.
I have ESET Nod and have scanned many times with it.
I ran error check in C: drive. When I came back in the room, it was finished, and windows was up.
I ran SFC /scannow several times, but it gets to 37%, and my computer reboots.
I ran Windows File Protection several times. Each time it would get halfway thru, then reboot.
I downloaded new definitions for windows defender, installed and ran, then nothing.
Other than having to get into the reg.check and removing programs, I'm at a loss at what to do! It is just not usable the way it is now. I never know when it is going to reboot, which is every 10-40 minutes it seems.
Keep in mind, I am only a beginner, but I'm a fast learner if anyone would be inclined to help.
Oh - one last thing...I turned off all power, unplugged all USB's, pushed the power button on the computer for 30 seconds, then plugged power back in, powered the system on, and that one took me half a day to finally get the computer to even boot up!
Things like this are probably a no-brainer - if you know what you're doing!
So thanks in advance for your patience. And if I don't answer quickly, you will know why. I will persevere!

hi,
i need some help.
i have a dell dimension 8300. when i boot up my PC i get a black screen with the mouse cursor on. I can move the cursor but nothing else comes up. this happens after the windows xp loading screen.
before this started happening i was getting a message every time i booted up saying system battery voltage low. then this problem started.
i have replaced the cmos battery and resetted my bios settings, but to no avail.
i have tried changing the order the drives boot up in, and putting the cd drive to boot first, so i can use my xp cd to do a repair install, but this didnt work either, the cd sounds like its booting but i still just get the black screen.
it won't even boot windows in safe mode, i get a black screen still with safe mode written in all four corners.
Ctrl Alt Del doesn't work and neither does pressing shift 5 times.
someone please help!!

Hi, i wasn't sure where to put this, so if it is in the wrong area I do apologize. This should be an "easy one" for you. When i step away from my computer for a long time, my screen turns black. Once i come back and move the mouse the screen "shows" again. Can you please tell me how to keep the screen "on" while I'm away for long periods of time. Does it have something to do with "screen saver" ?

at school, i was recommended to remove service pack 3 from my computer. No, not by a student but a teacher. While it did run slightly better at first, upon restarting the computer was unable to boot. A repair of the OS has not worked. The operation froze in the middle of installing devices. Does anyone know why killing service pack 3 might have caused this? Or any ideas to recover the data before trying a reformat?
