Default Thunderbird v3.01 outgoing mail question

hello folks . . . . just upgraded to 3.01 today at work after an update reminder and all seems well . . . done the same at home and it all went pear shaped

got this message:

Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.ntlworld.com. The server does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Untick 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider.

now then . . . i'm pretty familiar with thunderbird and i know i didn't change any settings . . just a bog standard install, but, for the sake of looking i checked the outgoing server settings and . . . authentication wasn't enabled, meaning i wasn't wrong, so this has me even more baffled?

couldn't send amail out so i rolled it back to 2.04 or whatever i had before andit's absolutely fine in an instant? any ideas ????

thank you

dave

Hello Dave,

Quick question: Do you have AVG installed?

Ok, let's try something a bit involved.
  1. Download the latest version of AVG
  2. Update Thunderbird
  3. Install & update AVG
  4. Reboot & Test TBird.

Also, see this from mozillamessenging.org
Unable to authenticate to SMTP server

After upgrading to Thunderbird 3, some Thunderbird users are getting an error message similar to:
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server ... ...when they send email.
This is caused by a bug in Thunderbird 2.0, where SMTP configuration settings that were previously ignored are now being used. Specifically, in Thunderbird 2, if an SMTP server did not require authentication, data in the user name / password fields was ignored. In Thunderbird 3, however, data in the user name and password fields is sent whether or not the server requires the data, causing some servers to reject the connection.
Work-Around

To fix this problem, modify the SMTP server settings. Select Tools | Account Settings and then Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the account list. A list of the configured SMTP servers will be displayed in the right pane:

Edit the SMTP account that is reporting the error by selecting the account and pressing the Edit button. Uncheck the Use name and password box.

thought i'd just post back here to let you know it failed miserably so i rolled it back to 2 again and it's fine . . . . but at least i know why now, funny how that's not happened at work though but come to think of it i'm not entirely sure if i actually sent a mail today . . . . .

i'll find out in the morning for sure . . . . good man thanks for that
