Default Comcast email cannot send (Windows Mail)

Hello all.

I have run into a crazy odd problem...

I was trying to be super cool genius guy at one of my girl friend's house and I setup her mom's computer (running Vista) to run a little bit more efficiently. I removed Norton and actually installed AVG so that it wouldn't use up so many resources. I also installed Google chrome for her to use instead of IE.

Anyway, she uses Windows mail and has for a while on Vista, but all of a sudden she cannot SEND email. She can RECEIVE, but cannot send.

I am using teamviewer and have tried so many different things... I used the correct ports (I promise) and I have no idea why all of a sudden it would stop working. It does not work on her husband's computer either, anymore.

I know they use ports 25 and 587 for sending email...but for the life of me, I don't know why it won't send. She's got 18 emails in her outbox, and nothing is sending.

I'm not even getting any errors.

Weird.

Any ideas?

Update: I just pinged the smtp server (smtp.comcast.net) on her computer through teamviewer, and it actually timed out every single time.

Something is not connecting here...any ideas?

Volman,

This could be a firewall issue. Do you have a 3rd party firewall? Did this happen before AVG installed?

I am in fact, quite cool. My graphing calculator confirms this

Nope..this happened AFTER the AVG install. The only thing that is on is Windows Firewall.

When I hit the "send/receive all" I see that on her email accounts are "checking for new mail" from the mail servers, but I do not see her windows mail trying to "send" anything.

I feel like possibly norton might be an issue (I uninstalled it via the control panel) so I did the removal tool this evening but haven't been able to restart because I am remoting into the user's computer and obviously I wouldn't be able to stay connected if a restart is needed.

It is just very odd that incoming can happen but no outgoing..

And so it continues.

Volman,

I have never heard of this happening but, let's try adding an exception to the resident shield of AVG.

Right click on the AVG system tray icon and choose Open AVG User Interface.

Next choose Resident Shield and right click

Click Open

Choose Manage Exceptions and add the mail server to it

EDIT: But first, running Norton Removal Tool is well worth it. I'd also imagine a restart would be needed after uninstalling a program like that that latches itself on to your machine in so many ways

It is really weird. I know what you mean!

OK, so I got to manage exceptions and just hit "edit list" and typed in smtp.comcast.net... is that correct? Seems like it is.

Tried it and still nothing. I don't seem to even be getting any errors. Is there a setting that turns off the "send" part of send/receive all? It just doesn't seem like it's trying to even connect to the smtp server.

And I have definitely run the Norton Removal Tool. I'm HOPING that solves things tomorrow (I instructed her to restart and try sending in the morning)

okay, keep shooting out ideas all!
