We"re writing to let you know that we've noticed an unusually high number of emails being sent from your Internet connection. Many of these emails have been blocked, as the residential email service limits the number of emails you can send.
If you are aware of these emails, then you'll have to start limiting the number of emails from your connection. If you are not aware of them, your computer may be infected with a virus or something similar.
If you're not familiar with this kind of problem, don't worry-we've included with our letter a step-by-step guide that will help you protect your pc from something like this happening in the future.
We realise that this is most likely not your fault, but it's important that you get yor pc fixed and the number of emails from your connection is reduced- otherwise we may have to suspend or cancel your internet service.
If you have any questions.... and then they give their contact info, bla bla bla, the next page is the guide
SUGGESTIONS FOR SECURING YOUR COMPROMISED PC:
The following guide will help secure a Windows PC against further abuse. We understand that this can be time consuming, however,
you must complete all steps. Please note: all security related programs/services detailed below are suggested as a courtesy-with the exception of PCGuard, none of them are in any way endorsed or supported by VirginMedia or any of its associated companies.
All security related programs/services installed by you on your pc are done entirely at your own risk. Virgin Media are in no way legally (or otherwise) liable for any problems arising. Internet Security are unable to offer technical support for any problems encountered whilst applying these steps.
1) Microsoft's Update site at
http://www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ will have the latest patches for Windows. We advice you to visit this site several times until there are no further updates available. (I DID THIS ALREADY BY PANCAKE SUGGESTION)
2)I you are using Windows Millenium, Windows XP or Windows Vista you must disable Syatem Restore before continuing (disabling System Restore will delete all restore points). If you do not know how to do this, please view the following Microsoft pages:
How to Enable and Disable System Restore - for Win Me
How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP - for Win XP
3) It is likely that your PC is infected with a special kind of vulnerability called a Trojan Horse. These kind of infections can often go undetected with conventional Anti Virus programs, and can result in the root cause remaining on your PC, even after stringent Anti Virus checks. We recommend therefore that you download and install the TrojanHunter program onto your PC. This is a free 30-day trial version of the program and does not require to enter payment details. If you wish to use the software after the free trial period you will have to purchase a license, however you can safely remove the software after the trial period without incurring charges.
TrojanHunter anti trojan scanner - Remove trojans, spyware, adware and more (30 Day Free Trial)
4) You now need to check for conventional viruses by using an online scan -
Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro USA If a virus is detected, you may click on the name of it to learn more. There are also options for you to clean the virus or delete the infected file. This should be run in addition to step number 3.
An alternative online scan is available at
Start BitDefender Online Scanner
5) If you do not have anti-virus software you must install one now. We provide free anti-virus software to all broadband customers, available from
Homepage - PCguard - Virgin Media (I HAVE THAT ONE)
In addition to anti-virus, PCGuard Total also provides a firewall and spyware protection (free to 4Mb and above broadband customers -WHICH I AM NOT) Please check the preferences for each to ensure they are enabled. Further advice is available on the above site. Please run a full scan once PCGuard is installed. (I HAVE AUTOMATIC WEEKLY FULL SCAN FROM PCGUARD AND LAST NIGHT WAS THE SCAN AND EVERYTHING WAS OK)
Support for PCGuard can be found at
http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...chsupport/.php
Further help can be obtained from Technical Support.
6)If using Windows ME, Xp or Vista, you can now re-enable System Restore if you wish to run this service, and create a new restore point.
7) Finally, in addition to the above advice, we recommend you visit Microsoft Security At Home webpage. The site includes a new spyware removal tool that Microsoft are developing, and advice for securing your PC and enabling automatic updates. Please visit
