Default [Answered] Problem with JPEG restoration (not from deletion)

Hey guys, I'm new here so I thought I'd try posting a problem that has vexed me for some time. I run a website for my artwork and stuff, so keeping my pictures in working order is pretty important. Having said that, a friend of mine black-boxed a photo I could use in PhotoShop (it's not copyrighted, we all used to have the photo) and it's the only copy I have.

He saved it as a JPEG, which means, no layers ... is there any way to recover the data beneath that black box? I could use any help guys and gals, when I search for restoration on Google, it keeps popping up with software that's supposed to bring my junk out of the recycle bin lol ...

Thanks everyone.

Hello HurriKane, welcome to PCHF, sorry for the delay.

I'm afraid that would completely defeat the purpose of a JPEG, which is essentially a single layer compressed image, designed to be as small file size as possible. There is no further information you can retrieve from a JPEG than what you already see on the screen.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
