the phenom black edition 3ghz is am2+ but the athlon II is am3 the am3 is cheaper than the am2+ but obviously in the long run i think it would work out better if i got the black edition i dunno tho

Wow, the info on the MSI site is ****. On the overview they claim it supports 95W CPUs, but in it's specification they claim only up to 65W.

I think it would just be better to get a new motherboard.

For the CPU, you could go with the 955 over 940. It is the AM3 Black edition, so it will work with an AM2+ motherboard and with an AM3 motherboard if you decide to upgrade again. Plus, it is only £3 more than the 940, so it's a good deal all around.
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game [HDZ955FBGIBOX] Processors AMD Phenom II

Or if you want to save a little money on the CPU, go with the 720, which is a triple-core AM3 Black Edition CPU. Basicly it's a 955 with 1 core disabled, so it costs less but it's still a fast CPU.
AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail [HDZ720WFGIBOX] Processors AMD Phenom II

For the motherboard, this would be a good, lower cost one. You will be able to use your current RAM with it and it will support either of those CPUs above.
Asus M4A785D-M Pro AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard [90-MIB920-G0EAY00Z] Motherboards AMD AM2+ (AMD Chipset)

Power supply.
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Ready Modular Power Supply [OCZ500MXSP-UK] Power Supplies OCZ

heh thats exactly what i thought about the motherboard

I was looking that that hard drive in the first place and the power supply also

this is just the kind of advice i have been looking for Thank you so much

I think i will likely pay the extra £30 for the extra core and colin mcrae game

Next thing to upgrade will be my graphics card when i got the cash
