Default Questions about upgrading ram/drive

I am helping a neighbor upgrade a system, and they are only looking to upgrade drive space and ram at this time. I'm unsure of how much ram this system can hold, but we were able to find a bigger hard drive. Here are the system specs:

Operating System System Model
Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Install Language: English (United States)
System Locale: English (United States) Compaq Presario 061 ER921AA-ABA SR1830NX NA660 0nx1411RE101AMBEM00
System Serial Number: CNH608156Z
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Processor a /Main Circuit Board b
2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Not hyper-threaded Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Amberine M 1.03
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.14 01/17/2006

The system currently has 1GB of ram and seems to be a bit sluggish with graphics intensive applications as well as browsing on firefox (but firefox is not meant to be lightning fast!). How much ram can this system hold, and what would you recommend that we use?

If you look at the motherboard you should see how many ram slots it has.

Also XP only recognizes 3.5 gigs of ram, I think.

Gracias! You have answered my question. However, upon further look:

960 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
Slot 'A0' has 512 MB
Slot 'A1' has 512 MB
Slot 'A2' is Empty
Slot 'A3' is Empty

I have tried looking up the motherboard and was unable to find what ram I should be using ex: PC 2100, PC 3000, etc. Which one should we use?

Yea I don't know much about what kinds of RAM there are and stuff, but you can get 1-2 gig sticks for not alot of $$$$

Go here and do the online test:

RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com

It will tell you what you've got and what you can have.
