Lightbulb A New PC 'Request'

Hello good people of the PCHelpForum,

Ever since my old pc has got old and started to die down with the usual moans and growns, i have been looking for a brand new pc to take me into the oncoming years. I have been previously thinking about gettin a new ready-made PC's from one of the many electronic stores however i have started to consider building my own. I have had no prior experience in building PC's and am fairly unknowledged to the whole process however i feel that if i was to start making one then it would be complete be it sooner or later. Now, this brings me on to why i am here.

I would like to get, if possible, full listings of items (motherboard, CPU, etc) for a brand new working desktop PC.

Below are my specifications (if you require more information then feel free to post):

  • Naturally, i would like a pc that will last me many years to come.
  • My preferences would be a pc that can handle gaming at the top level but can also switch to working, browsing and essay writing. If possible, music and video diversity would be a nice addition. Overall a well balanced top end pc that can facilitate for all aspects would be lovely.
  • Budget wise, price is not necessarily an issue so a guideline may be up and around £2000 (about $4000) although anything cheaper would be fine. Quality over quantiy of course.
I would say :
  1. Speed
  2. Quality (Graphics)
  3. Budget
To wrap up, an all around pc that can switch from gaming to movies to browsing to word processing, one that will "last" for a long time and if possible not become outdated quickly. (If there are new hardware releases coming out soon that are worth the wait then please mention if possible).

Thank You and im sure that my problem will be dealt with grandly as all my older problems have been.

P.S I understand that this may demand a large(ish) reply and i am grateful for whatever information i can receive.

P.P.S Please excuse the slightly extravagant language as i think the heat in this room has got to my head, Thank You

Boomboy, you have described yourself as PC Illiterate. As such, I would not recommend building your own PC.

If you are looking to train yourself in computers, I would recommend starting out with a very cheap used computer that you can take apart and put back together and learn from.

If you find that you can strip one apart and put it back together without any problems and it works, then go your dream computer. If you find you can't get it to work, then you haven't wasted $4,000.

I understand fully where you are coming from.

This project i will work on with a close family relative who has put together many PC's and im sure knows his way around them. I myself have several old PC's that i will 'train' on while i decide about a new PC.

I should have mentioned previously that this PC is not 100% guaranteed to happen as always and that i would only like this report as a secondary option and thank you for the understandable advice.

Q6600 cpu (about 115 quid now now and at that price its a steal)
Asus P5K any of the range the pro is a nice board (or any of the P35 motherboards should suffice)
Either an 9600GT or 9800GTX from the nvidia camp (unless your loaded and want a 280) AMD/ATI 4870 is a very good card for the cash
Make sure you buy a good psu and I mean a good one not just high powered

Have you got any recommendation psu-wise?

Edit: I have also heard that dual-core can often work out faster than quad - Just wandering which would be best judged on spec' given above.

Well you wanted something that will last and apps will be written for Quads soon enough. If you go for a E8500 you will get a higher clock speed but only 2 cores worth. The Q6600 will clock to macth the E8500 if you so desire although you will not notice the difference in real world computing.

As for PSU I use the OCZ 780 watt ModXstream something like that or similar from corsair antec or seasonic. Go for a modular psu for neatness
