Smile Fidning myself a new motherboard

Hi guys,

I will soon be coming into a decent amount of money and I need to upgrade my motherboard, but I don't know how to look for the one I need. I know what I want from it, which is a start, and I was hoping you guys could find me a motherboard with all of these things.

1. Must be able to overclock easily and effectively
2. Must be able to use DDR2 800/PC2 6400 RAM.
3. Must support high-end graphics cards like a GeForce 9800GTX.
4. Must be the normal ATX size mobo
5. Must be socket 775 so my heat sink will fit.

And other bits and bobs like a decent amount of USB ports and a few PCI-E slots, SLI and standard.

Maximum £100

Thanks in advance.

PS. I forgot to mention. It needs to be Intel.

I sure like my EVGA Nvidia nForce 780i (132-CK-NF78-A1). Its really nice and it supports tri-SLI! And overclocking is really easy. There are a ton of different options. I hope this little bit helps.

In The US you can get it for about $250. then there is a $20 mail in rebate, too.

I'm afraid that is a little out of my price range. Anything cheaper?

EDIT: I found something similar and cheaper. Would this be a good buy?

ASUS P5N-D nForce 750i SLI Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard - Ebuyer

or this?

Asus Commando P965 Motherboard - Cheap at Ebuyer!

Yes I would recommend this one here. I was looking at the exchange rate and it would be about £94 if you could find it over there.

I would recommend EVGA over ASUS because I've read that most people on the internet have a really bad time with ASUS' customer service, but a lot of people seem to like EVGA. Gigibyte is also another brand that seems really good. Maybe some people may disagree with me on this, but this is the general consensuses that I've gathered by reading on-line.

Even though it a US website Newegg has got a lot of products to choose from(for reference, I don't know if they ship over the pond), and they have a ton of reviews and stuff. You can learn a lot just by sifting through and reading the reviews.

Oh, and one other thing. The motherboard that I recommended has only 4 SATA connections where as the other one that you were looking at(ASUS Commando) has 6. It might not make any difference, but it may be something to look at.

I'd vote against the ASUS Commando based solely on the 'old tech' P965 Northbridge chipset. The P965 was introduced about 2 years ago and has been replaced a few times over.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with it because no doubt there are thousands in service and performing very well right now. My point is, it would not be on my list for a new motherboard purchase regardless of how inexpensive the board.

Sadly, no UK based store that I know of stocks EVGA components. They do, however, stock Gigabyte, which you have also suggested. Then if you all agree, Gigabyte is what I should be looking at then, no?

For example, something along the lines of this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143227 ?

It is also a shame that you think that way of ASUS, Cobracon. On all the UK sites I use, they're the ones with more choice of SLI mobos. I've foudn only one Gigabyte SLI mobo and it's an old one. But then.. I suppose SLI isn't so important for me.. it's not like I'm going to attempt to play Crysis on maximum settings...

Jester, I've done some fishing and I have found that EVGA mobo on a UK website Scan Computers UK: EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1, NF750i SLI ForTheWin, 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

It's a little overpriced for me but if it is as good as you say it is I will be willing to make a small sacrifice.
