Default [Pending] Replacing Motherboard and processor.

Hi,

I am pretty new to doing any replacing of components inside a PC, the most I have ever done before is upgrade the RAM.

Anyway long story short I tried to clean out the inside of my PC and pulled the processor off the motherboard, tried to put it back on but mashed the pins, which embedded into the motherboard so now I need a new Motherboard and processor.

The current processor is a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz (Socket 478 type)?
Motherboard is a MS-6701 from Medion (Cybermaxx).

It seems more expensive to find these now nearly obsolete parts than it is to do a significant upgrade.

I have been advised these:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 2GHz Socket 775 800MHz FSB L2 1MB Cache Retail Box Processor - Ebuyer

Crucial 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL6 Lifetime Warranty - Ebuyer

However I need advise on which motherboard to go with them. It will also have to acommodate a discrete graphics card (Nvidia 64mb). Other than that I have no real need for any other extras, just need it working again!

The PC is a Medion Cybermaxx MT5

If anyone can assist me it would be great!

Also will any motherboard fit my case or do I need to buy a certain one?

Thanks!

Hello Dfinn Welcome to PCHF

My best advice to you would be to work in the opposite direction you are taking. Your best bet is to pick a suitable motherboard capable of supporting the features you are looking for....THEN pick the components to attach to them.

At this point, you are looking at a major overhaul anyways. So it's best to start from point A, which is the motherboard.

The first thing and most important thing you need to do is decide what you want the computer to be good at. Then the next thing you need to do is figure out what you can salvage from your old computer. Usually the case, optical drive, hard drive, and floppy drive are the only things to migrate. In some cases a power supply and peripheral cards like a sound card are saved as well. Then of course, you need to decide on a budget.

If you can let me know those few things, I can at least point you in a direction.
